I recently brought home two 1050's under the premise that I would make one good one from the two. (One runs but only has one forward gear and reverse, the other doesn't run but supposedly has good gears)

Here's my question: Before I spend a weekend swapping the rear-end from one to the other, is there some way I can determine for certain that the gears are good? To be honest, when I look in there I'm pretty intimidated!

Has anyone swapped rear-ends on a tube frame that can offer some advice for the procedure itself?

I really can't afford (time-wise) to spend a weekend on this only to find out that the other rear-end is no good, or that there was some simple fix for the existing rear-end.

Any advice on what I could inspect/adjust/repair on the existing rear-end to determine if it's even worth swapping?

How do the gears look?
These transmissions are usually pretty easy to work on. The most common problem seems to be worn gears due to people shifting while in motion/ Improperly adjusted clutch or worn brake disc.

Do you have a picture of the gears you can post on here?

Up to you if this is a good idea, but does the starter work? pull the plug to remove some of the resistance from the compression and try rolling it over in each gear. won't be able to test under full load, but may be able rule out the worst case scenario.

Just a note that they are really pretty easy to swap. I done my last swap on my 800 in about an hour and a half, and I am by no means a mechanic. But it would still be nice to know that the second one is good. Also if it is first and reverse that you have you may want to check that the pin going through the shifter arm to hold it in place on the shifter shaft for secon and third gear has not broken or fell out. I had that happen once.

Trent, your post sounds like a likely problem there. I don't know what rears these are, but only getting two gears sounds like a simple fix.

Here's pics of the "good" rear-end. Not sure what I'm looking at in regards to what is good or bad. The oil was already drained from it and I don't see any bits or pieces, but I wondered if there wasn't some way I could 'work through' the gears to determine that they all work properly... I don't even know what that means! LOL. Maybe the Doc can help me out... Fingers crossed...

The gears dont look to be too worn, but it looks very dirty in there.
I would take the bottom pan off and clean it real good before I would use it.

Have you tried moving the shifting forks into gear?
I would also adjust the rear axle end play while you are at it http://gardentractortalk.com/forums/files/file/2739-bolens-rear-axle-end-play-adjustment/

As Bruce mentioned in the above post ,there are some great pointers and pictures in the service manual.

So, let me ensure that I understand what you're suggesting: I should elevate the rear-end so that the wheels are off the ground, pull the spark plug out of the head, put the tractor in gear and then turn the engine over via the battery and starter to see if the rear wheels turn??? This sounds feasible. (Except that the only experience I have with these -or any- tractors is with my other 1050 that won't even turn over if in gear) Perhaps this would work even though it doesn't on the other if the rear wheels are elevated?

I was suggesting just put it in gear and use the starter to try moving the tractor - but only a short distance.
If what I suggested doesn't make sense or won't work - don't try it.

On the other hand - Bolens garden tractors are tough beasts, what's the likelihood of two bad transmissions?

If you decide to try the starter idea, Just remember not to crank the starter for more than 20-30 seconds at a time or you will burn it up.....
That is very good advice.
