Ok I have the 1253 apart and picked up a gasket set for the oil leak and decided to take the head off and this is what I found ,Is this normal build up on the valves and piston and if so how do I clean it up ?

Thanks in advance ,

Matt-

I'm not going to say extremely abnormal for an older small engine. You probably have a piston ring set beginning to go down. Carbon deposits like that are usually caused by burning oil.

The owner is supposed to decarbonize the head on small engines after a couple hundred hours. If it has never had the top off, this could very well be a buildup of years. I don't like the way it accumulated, though. I'd consider a ring set.

I have been known to take a wire brush and clean it up, as well as an old beater screwdriver that I don't mind tearing up to scrape.

Start off with a putty knife and be careful not to scratch things up too much, just remove the Moo-haa.. Once the heavy stuff is off, get a drill and use one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/complete-sanding-disc-kit-43029.html

The Blue ones do a great job but clog up quick.. Buy a spare package of them.. JMO

That thing most likely has a ton of hours on it.. I would not stop at just replacing the rings.. Since you are tearing it down to replace those, evaluate your cylinder as well.. They 'oval' perpendicular to the crankshaft over time so take the time to check the piston as well.. Lots of information is available about those engines and the knowledge is yours for the asking so don't hesitate..

Turn the crank to Top Dead Center(TDC). Clean the top of the piston and around the valves. The way the head is dinged, I suspect the piston will be too. If it was mine, I'd completely overhaul the engine. Check the manual for it and the B&S Repairmans Manual. The B&S manual has a good section on generic rebuilding techniques. Good Luck, Rick

Might be the reason for the loud racket the short time I had it running , There was only 1 belt on the pulley when I bought the 1253 thought it was kind of odd ..

Ok now where can I find one of these ?
