It has happen three times now, when working some what hard at full throttle it sucks oil into the filter area and down the carb. It smokes like the dam but still runs great then quits smoking. It was a new air filter just before it did it the first time. I have check the oil ring on the dipstick, is the another breather that I am not aware of ?? any ideas.

my 1655 was blowing oil up in the breather. i put new rings in, and fixed the problem. your nearest cummings dealer can get you rings, it will run you about 75 bucks a set.

Thats the thing it has great compression and it does it only after running for a while then dumps oil into filter area and then not again, i mean maybe a shot glass full or a well maybe not that much??

Do you operate on any serious inclines.
Another time to check would be for missing parts in the crankcase breather under were it bolts to the engine block.

I was going to mention the crankcase breather setup. It shows in the service manual for the Onan how to go about cleaning it and making sure it is working correctly. If it isn't a clogged breather then I would say you either have worn valve guides or might need new rings but I am willing to put my money on a clogged breather.

My fresh rebuilt 18hp Onan does this occasionally. I know the engine is in great shape ring/piston/bore wise, but every now & then it will suck up oil & smoke like a banshee. I figure something's up with the reed, but not gotten into it yet. Last several times I've cranked her....no smoke at all.

Oh, & be sure your dipstick is sealing right. If the dipstick seal isn't doing it's job, it will cause this sucking of oil.

Well I finally got around to doing a compression test and the engine is only getting 80 psi per cylinder, I think she need a rebuild or re-power I have a 25 horse 2 cyl v Subaru engine I was going to install in my loader tractor when I got around to building it LOL
how hard and how much to rebuild this engine, any guesses it continues to blow oil into carb area even after I took it apart and went through it all.

i paid around 200 bucks ( oil pan gasket, rings and head gasket) at cummings. if you get it part, look at the oil pan, i had alot of small crack around the plug hole ( i guess from over tightning the plug). i sprayed box line paint on the out side of the pan. that stuff is hard as nails. i also used a newer oil plug the kind you push in and turn to release the oil and a hose can go on the end of it ( no mess)

I put about $150 in individual gaskets, rings, spark plugs, & oil filter when I rebuilt my 18hp Onan. I got my parts from Onanparts.com, Your Onan Parts Solution
But 16hp rings are higher than the larger Onan's, so will run you more like the $200 as Tyler quoted.

Well i pulled off the heads tonight to check out the cylinder walls everything looks good in there. So I think she need a re ringing to bring up the compression. How do I tell what I need for rings with out having to pull the pistons I think I will use the machine for a while until the parts get here and another thing if I order a full gasket set does it usually come with carb gaskets as well. If it does it looks like not to much more for a full set in stead of ordering head and pan gaskets with a carb rebuild kit.

Well I built a leak down tester and sure enough it is blowing by into the crank case on both cylinders and number one is blowing into the carb so she needs rings and valve job. I was kind of wondering about the valves because when you tried to open the engine up quickly it would splatter back a little gas at times!
now to find some rings and gaskets any best deals out there

Could just be valve clearance adjustment on the valves for them not sealing. While you are doing the rings I would do a valve job also. There are a couple of kits on ebay and like Daniel mentioned Onanparts.com has everything you would need also.
