Looking at a 38" Bolens snow thrower, model 18311. Owner says it is for the xl/xt series or Medium frame tractors. When I looked at the manual it shows it as a PTO driven unit. Aren't all medium frame attachments belt driven from clutch on the engine by way of the mule drive ? ??

No there was a PTO kit you added to be able to run shaft drive attachments. It was done this way so you could use your tube frame attachments and not have to buy new ones.

That is exactly what I used for the front pto on my LGT 165 , It came off an XL12 Bolens. That was a pretty rugged tractor except for the overhead tehcumsa and wiped out steering sector gears.

Thanks for that info. I have never seen or even heard of that drive type setup. Are they around or scarce as hens teeth? Any photos of one around some place so I know what I am after?

I was looking at mounting one on my H16XL.

What Dr bolens showed you is what you need---and they are real easy to put on , two bolts and two nuts made out of round rod .same set up on my g16xl

Medium frame Bolens used a mule drive to run the mower deck by belt and a PTO shaft for the 38" snow thrower. Tube frame attachments spin in the opposite direction and can't be used. Medium frame engines are reversed. Flywheel is towards the driver. Paul

Towards the driver?
The Briggs and Tech in my two tractors run with the crank shaft parallel with the tractor. From the driver seat they turn counter clockwise. From the flywheel they turn clockwise. I thought the reason for the PTO on the Medium frame was to use the tube frame attachments? ? Where did I go astray ? ?

The medium frames had their main drive shaft bolted to the flywheel and an electric pto clutch attached on the other side of the engine to the crank stub. You can only use their attachments. Here is a pic showing two of my old ones with attachments in place. Paul

Hard to see, but the first has a mule drive in place and the second has a pto shaft coming out to the snow thrower.

The 18311 is the proper blower for a medium frame.
