I posted in one of the other threads about us getting this thing running and realized I don't think we ever posted pictures of it. I had a chance this weekend to get a few pics and took a small video for a walk around and of it running.
We knew the motor would turn over when we got it but that was the extent of it. It was sitting at the side of the garage for at least the last 6 months. Couple of weekends ago we finally had a chance to start working on it. We cleaned out the gas tank, ran new fuel line. Purchased a gasket kit and carb rebuild kit.
I rebuilt the carb but kept having issues with it leaking out of the throttle body. Figuring it was either a stuck needle or a bad float I kept pulling it off and checking it. I realized each time I dumped the fuel bowl even though we had cleaned the gas tank and ran new fuel line with a filter that somehow we were still getting tiny pieces of dirt in the gas. Worked through all of that and we were able to get it running. The problem was it would only fire off every couple of tries.
We put the timing light on and sure enough it was missing. The points were already set and cleaned. The spark plug cable was a little questionable though. Decided to pull the flywheel off and check the magneto. The coil at the magneto was cracked and in pretty bad shape. I switched it over to battery ignition with parts we already had. Once that was done it fired off every time on the first try when the starter belt didn't slip.
I forgot to mention that dad took the starter generator and had it rebuilt. They do a great job, with sandblasting them and painting along with new nuts for the wire connections. The other item that needs some use is the variable drive pulleys. From it living a hard life sitting out in the weather for who knows how many years there is a lot of surface rust on the pulleys. It makes it very grabby when first getting it going. Otherwise it runs great and a very fun tractor to drive around with.
I know the grill / hood on the 1962 year Bolens Ride-a-matics isn't everyone's favorite. We are unsure if we will restore it or leave it tell it's story with it's natural patina and beauty
