Yesterday I went and picked up this old girl.

Serial # 05724. That makes it a late 1966.

Came with sleeve hitch, chains, and dozer blade.

It has a few issues, but nothing that can't be dealt with. I had the engine

running today. Sounds good, and no smoke. A bit of butchery was done

to the grill/hinge which in turn made the hood sit back an inch too far, on top

of the aluminum dash.

There is also an issue in the tranny. I haven't looked

in there yet, but I do have 2 spares for parts or entire exchange.

One thing I'm not clear on, is the aluminum dash and aluminum nose cone

time frame. Did all the units built in 66 have alum dash, and only the early ones with both

alum dash and cone?

This one has a plastic nose cone, which is broken. I do have a replacement.

The paint polishes up pretty good, so I'm going to keep it original.

As soon as I seen the pics I was getting ready to ask the same thing. I see it has the narrow rear tires and the aluminum dash. I thought all the 1966 Massey Fergusons had an aluminum dash and nose cone. It would make sense that maybe they ran out of the aluminum nose cones mid year and switched them over to plastic.

I seem to recall Doug saying that they stopped using the aluminum nose cone late in the 66

production run, but I can't find the post.

Maybe in that thread Alan started about the oldtimer dealer he'd spoken with, about the issues

they where having with the aluminum.

I think almost all 1966 models have aluminum dash AGCO parts books say up to serial #6134 have them but they only show plastic for the nose ring. I think only early 66s have the aluminum nose, at some point they changer to plastic.

You dork, it took me three times to figure out why it was looping back into the same thread...

Thanks Doug, that's helpful.

BTW tractor looks good, both my 66s only have aluminum dash, 1 had no nose ring the other has plastic, both are late 66s.

Another sure fire way to tell if it's a 66 is look for the missing rib on the bottom side of the frame under the engine. Lot's of parts can get changed but who's gonna change the frame.

I did look for that Doug. No rib there.

Something else I noticed. No holes to mount the steel

dash to the aluminum. (where the arrows are)

I think the 66 has tabs welded on the back of the steel that slide in behind the alum dash and get bolts at top.I should have taken pictures when I had mine out.
