Ok so I have been having a problem with the starter on my 317 onan I believe it's a p218g the top edge of the teeth just barely catch the top of the teeth on the fly wheel so I loss ended the bolts to check things out and when I did the starter tipped up and the teeth meshed together perfectly but when I tightened the bolts back up the starter tipped down away from the fly wheel again any idea on the cause thanks

I have had a problem like your on me JD 214.

The starter would spun and the starter benix would not engage to turn the flywheel.

I removed the starter and cleaned and lubed the starter benix.

Tested the starter with a battery. The starter benix started working again.

I little rust or glum on the starter shaft where the benix moves can stop the benix from reaching the flywheel

The vendor reach eats the flywheel without a problem but just the very tips of the teeth catch the tips of the flywheel teeth unless I losses the starter bolts then it will mesh up fine but if you try to start it with the bolts lessened up so it meshes up then the starter will twist down and away from the flywheel because of the torque
