A couple of months ago I started taking my 58 Rideamatic apart to do a rebuild/refresh/restoration.

It's not going to be a total restoration, I don't plan on making it quite factory new. The steering was modified at some point, and a clearance notch was cut in the frame, so it can't look quite original. I'm rebuilding the engine, and plan on getting the tractor close to original.

Here is what it looked like when I started.

It's totally disassembled now.

The engine block is at a machine shop getting bored, and the crank turned down. I have all of the bearings and bushings out of the frame so I can remove the paint. I've been waiting for the weather to warm up before I start the paint removal so I can get everything primed and painted.

So far I haven't found anything major wrong with it. I plan on replacing all of the bearings and bushings and the drive chain. There is some wear in the lift mechanism, so I have a little fabrication/rebuilding to do there. I'm debating whether to try to repair the hood, or just make a new one, it's got some extra holes in it, and is kind of beat up. I got a set of decals from Hank Watkins to put on once it's painted.

Helpfully when I'm done, it will be ready for another 56 years of work!

I'll keep you all posted as I go.

Quick update:

Friday I got the engine block and crank back from the machine shop. Cylinder was bored to 2 15/16" from 2 7/8", and the rod journal was turned 0.010 under. Yesterday I spent a few hours blasting engine parts and a few other pieces I had handy.

Today I shot a coat of primer on everything I blasted yesterday. I think it looks good, and it really looks and feels like I accomplished something.

Here is what it looks like today.

I think I'll shoot the color on the engine before I assemble it, and I realized I don't have any catalyst for it, so no color today. I used the code for color that Doc Bolens and the others came up with last year. It looks great, I found some original paint yesterday while blasting, and it looks like a perfect match.

My wife got some seat time on the 1050 today, used the tiller to turn our compost pile, and then she tilled the garden. It's much nicer having the hydraulic lift for that tiller!

Spent some time working on the tractor today. I got the chassis/frame stripped and primed. Wire wheel on the 4 1/2" grinder took the paint and rust off pretty quickly.

I'm hoping to shoot color tomorrow. I need to start reassembly, I'm running out of places to put parts!

I think I'm going to fabricate a new hood, it's got a bunch of extra holes in it, and it's pretty dented too.

Here they are before primer.

Hopefully I'll have more to add tomorrow.

Looks great! I can't wait to spray something that color. Now don't scratch it putting it together! :D

Over the last few days, I've had a little time to work on it.

The engine is assembled and installed on the tractor. I really want to start it up, but have to rebuild the carburetor yet. I still have some more parts to strip, prime and paint before final assembly. Hopefully not too much longer... I'm definitely tired of wire wheels and blasting. :wallbanging:

I wouldn't get to worried about making the hood perfect. I'm sure there were some from new that weren't as nice as others.

Looks good so far!
