Picked up another 1556 over the weekend. It came with a tiller in great shape. The tractor is in great shape as well. Everything is there, paint is in good original condition, no rust. Seat is a Bolens, but off of a newer tractor, but at least the PO kept it Bolens. Missing one headlight. One original front tire, other is a new. Original rear tires. The Tecumseh fires right up, but the tractor will not move. Not sure what's going on with the Eaton 10, but I'm picking up a new filter and some Dex III today and hopefully will change them tonight. Seems to me that if it doesn't move at all there is a block somewhere in the oil and I will probably need to remove and investigate the Eaton. Anybody have experience similar on a 1256, H14, 1556, or H16?

If the lift goes up and down, the charge pump is working and the problem is with the hydrostatic pump/motor or the pressure relief valves in the pump/motor. I had one off of my 1256 and replaced the seals, they are not too bad to tear apart, but everything that comes apart must go back together exactly as it was dis-assembled.(all faces the same, all balls back in the same holes etc). You just have to be very careful and watch the dis-assembly.

Before you do anything else, make sure that the idler that puts tension on the belts is doing so (just ahead of the dash tower on the left side of the tractor). I had a 1456 that had the same symptoms, and that was the problem. The hydro was actually fine, but without tension on the belts, the driveshaft was not turning to turn the hydro.

Thanks guys, I'll take the ratchet strap off of the tiller and see about the lift. I'll also have to check out the tensioner. Both good ideas.

Keep us to date I'm having problems with my 1656 as well. I'm creeping but not without squealing & jerking as I increase speed. My lift goes up & down good but the control valve is leaking a lot.

Creeping is caused by mis-adjustment of the linkage that makes the tractor go forward and reverse. It has to be adjusted so that when it is in park, the control valve is in the absolute neutral position. I've seen a procedure to adjust it somewhere, but not sure where.

In the pictures that you posted the idler that goes against the drive belts is in the park position. Double check to see that it is against the drive belts. That tractor looks to be in nice shape.

Not to hack this thread but need to clear up my terminology. My use of the word "creeping" meant it goes slow but will not move fast without the squealing & jerking. F-to N-to R all works great.Thanks

Well, got some new belts and adjusted the front PTO, changed the hydro filter and topped off the hydraulics with Dextron ATF. She moves!!!
