Todd, take a peek at your tank, you should be able to un-solder the tank and remove the "extra" section. Then just re-solder it to make the short tank.

Oh... and if you have an inert gas you can fill the tank with, that helps. You could fill it with water and drain it out before you heat the tank. That should be enough to get any fumes out. Just remember to leave the cap off and you should be fine.

When someone brought a gas tank for us to weld up or solder we would hook a hose to the tank and one of the the trucks. Let the exhaust fumes run into the tank for about 15 minutes to kill all the fumes. Never had one blow up.

Although it is a good alternative to trading or buying a short tank, short tanks are not that hard to find.... So, I would rather not mess with taking the 12 tank apart, unless absolutely nessesary.
