The rescue Bolen I picked up a few weeks back is going to the tractor show. Decided to change oil in it. Got that done (ewww) and started it up. Running fine, no signs of trouble when all of a sudden it tries to take off for the back end of the trailer on an angle that would've trashed the tractor more and possible damaged the trailer.

The return to neutral spring and the friction discs on that linkage (bottom of the tranny) all gave up in concert and it wanted to go, go, go.
I'm not a small guy and have some mass to throw, but that tractor was having none of it. I managed to get the wobble pedal into reverse and shortly after, the key off. I then spent the next 30 seconds thanking my savior that there weren't any kids in front of it...
Ryan and I tore into it and got it all freed up.
He replaced the spring,
test drive fine... it's all good now but man was that scary. It's the only thing on this machine I really think was over engineered and with the friction discs, it WILL eventually get stiff with neglect. Add in a 40+ yr old spring and someone who knows nothing about what to watch for and disaster could happen.

Happy ending, but scary when it happened. Only loss was the oil drain pan.

First off, I'm so glad nobody was hurt. As I reflect back on some of the mishaps I've had over the last 25 years of doing this and how it must have looked from a distance, it's easy to chuckle about them since there were no injuries. Someday you'll tell this story and get a good laugh. Until then, change your drawers and sit down and relax a bit.

That was a close call! Glad you got it to 'whoa' before pain was inflicted. Sorry for the loss of the oil pan. Do we need a clean up crew sent out for the spill?
