just bought a bolens 1886 large frame with a kohler twin cylinder...1972 vintage I'm told by seller...picked it up fpr $ 850...my problem is no tag at all anywhere on engine to tell me what model the engine is...the seller said it is an 18 HP but that's all he could remember...is there any way to tell what the engine is with out a tag ?..is there just one engine they would have used in that year?...by the way the thing runs great and isn't in bad shape at all...came with just a snow plow but no mower deck but I might pick one of those up later on this year I'm new to bolens and kohler engine so thanks for any info

I have an 1886-01 in the shop with a K482 in it. I imagine that's what it is, it is too old to be a Magnum.

The tag should be on the left side (operator's left) engine shroud. Square plate about 3'' by 4''.

thanks for the info guys...sure was easy and painless...did plow the driveway this evening ..thought I might need chains and weights but never spun a tire...machine did better than I ever thought it would..20 minutes plowing sure beats 2 hours shoveling the white stuff..i'm really happy with this bolens...needs some paint but that will have to wait till it warms up

  • I'm close to uniontown pa blackjack...wish I could post pics but at this time I just don't have a way to do it...I might pick up a deck sooner or later, but for now it's a plowing machine..the good old john deere does the mowing....the fellow I bought it from has at least 15 complete bolens tractors and is selling some off as he's in his 80's now and says it's time to get rid of a few...he also has at least 10 -12 plows and decks for what ever model they would fit

If you park it at the end of the driveway with a For Sale sign on it, a picture would be on this site within 4 hours.

Hahahaha

Welcome to the site and glad to read it's working out for you.

Another way to narrow down which 1886 it is would be to tell us what color it's painted. (if original) It seems they painted the -01, -02, etc differently.
