Just got a d4-10 a week ago been working on it and was trying to decide weather to repaint or not? Some parts look like orginal paint others have been repainted at some point. I thought the hood was orginal until i noticed today that the decals on hood appear to be stenciled on and or hand painted some of the edges look a lil choppy up close first thought was someone just taped it off and painted over it but it looks to thin like its only one small layer of paint and theres no evidence of a decal or film anywhere else around the letters. Did they hand paint these first few tractors. My serial number is 80023 which being in the first 25 i could see a factory trying to rush them out the door to dealers before getting decals actually set up in production which would be cool.but on the other hand and most likely it could be someone's touch ups over the years. Are reproduction decals still available i seen some old post from years ago about new decals. Can someone send a link if they do.

Far as I know I'm the only one who makes these decals. All my tractors had stenciled painted emblems, so I made the pattern from a picture so the vinyl decals will look just like the painted originals. I am completely covered up at work to the point of exhaustion at the moment, but I could cut a set when time allows. I'll have to look for my pics to show you an example.

welcome! I think all but maybe some of the tractors at the end of production (d4-12 maybe and the jbs) used painted stenciled decals. yours is a very early one. not sure when but somewhere in the early 8000 serial number range the designation went from d-4-10 to d4-10 on the hoods. same with d-4-7s. post more pics of your machine for us bush hog aficionados and be sure to add your serial number info to the registry. this is the place to be for any questions about your machine.

I noticed on mine a very faint pattern, almost like a screen or cheese cloth imprint. I thought maybe they used some type of screen printing on them.

Doesnt have orginal lights and needs trim for the sides of the hood. And a seat. A few pics of an orginal seat would help im not sure how they attach to the pan other than the metal lip thats bent up to keep it from going to far forward. were they glued down originally?

It's only original once you know.
I do like keeping stuff orginal if its clean enough but unfortunately most of the tractor has been repainted or touched up so im leaning towards complete restoration. I also need a transmission i have one gear stripped out so i have no reverse :( im gonna dig into that later on this summer and when i do that ill probably do a completely restoration.

Seat cushion was not glued or bolted, just laid in the opening. Most of us at some point have probably forgotten to take the seat off before hauling it down the road at 55 miles an hour.......I did it and got lucky, the cushion slid down and fell on the floorboard and stayed.

Painted the rims and lug nuts over the last few days. I know the rear hubs were orginally yellow and lug nuts were un painted but my hardware was rusty and i thought id try it and i really like how it contrast against the yellow of the rim. I used old john deer yellow in majic paint. The newer jd yellow was more brighter and more deeper yellow. The older version seem to have more of a duller yellow look like new holland yellow but just a little deeper looking. They seem different in person photos make the yellow seem darker than it really is...

Very nice D-4-10 you have there, I would clean it up if it was mine but it's yours to do with as you see fit. I have #8756 and this is what my original seat looks like.
