I have a couple old G9 bolens tractors, and one G10. I also have a 2185 shaft drive cub cadet with a 18hp vtwin kohler and hydros with foot pedals...

Im curious how big of a PITA it would be to transplant the cub drive train (all of it, including motor) into the tube frame chassis?

Has it been done?

Any advice?

Thanks in advance

If you are a reasonable fabricator with some engineering skills, like most of us are, I don't see why you couldn't. You planning on using the 2185 transaxle? Not the strongest in the world, but OK. The one in my CC 3208 is way heavier.

Yeah, i was planning on running the 2185 transaxle, i dont plan on any heavy use, mainly just cause i like the style of the old bolens tractors, and the cubs body and deck is pretty trashed, i just thought itd be a cool run around or for towing lawn carts around and such, maybe take it to shows for something unique...

Im guessing the biggest issue will be getting the kohler to mount up?

It's not impossible! I put an Eaton/Peerless in an AC.

A quick visual inspection told me the bolens and the cub are more less the same physical size, so i got that going for me.

It pry will be a lil while till i get to doing it, i got enough other eaiser crap to get out of the way first.

I was mainly wondering what i was getting myself into.

The bolens ill be using is actually the one ill be stealing parts off of to get my other G9 togther, the parts G9 is pretty rough bodywise, and has a busted tow pin holder on the rear, so its garbage.

So after i steal everything off it for the nice G9 there wont be much left but a bare carcass, which is why ive been tossing this idea around.

That will then leave me with a G10 i have no idea what to do with.

One thing you need to look at is beefing up the steering on the G9. I blew out the steering on a tube frame after installing a magnum twin. They are not designed for the extra weight and will flex and jump gears during hard turning.

I was wondering how the front axle/steering would handle the extra weight. Were you able to sure up the factory gear or did you graft in a stouter one?

One thing i am curious about though, 2 of my 3 tube frames have busted off steering wheels. Are replacements available? Or am i down to rednecking one on?

I used some allthread across the bottom of the U channel to try to stiffen it up. It helped for awhile but eventually crapped out.

if the splines and threads are still good , you can get new steering wheels.

Would it just be easier to just graft the body to the cub?
I actually was thinking of this at route #2 if swapping the mechanicals over would be to hard. But then it would really look like a mutt...lol

That would be a good name.

Painted up in Bolens colors; hardly anyone would know. A G-21, G-85 or a G-18; what ever the next number of the series should have been. Would be an extremely "rare" unit.

If I were you i'd keep the Bolens drivetraim and just swap the engine....Bolens rear is much stronger than the Cubs....

I like the way you think.

I guess if i painted the belly black and swapped over the bolens dash panel it would still look pretty legit.

As for dropping the cub motor in with the bolens rear, the particular tractor im using has the housing around the tow pin broke off, so its junk anyways.
