I believe you need a coil with an internal resistor. Don't let the counterman talk you into a universal as they are not internally resisted and meant for cars. If you buy one without an internal resister buy a dozen points sets because it will burn them as fast as you can change them.

I got an external resistor coil for the Bolens 1250. I already installed it. If it is the wrong one is there any way to install an external resistor and if so how and with what?

To use what you have you would need to find out how many ohm resistor is supposed to be on there and solder one inline. Most automobiles have it built into the wire harness.

Check with NAPA. They should have an external resistor you can install in front of the coil. You will probably need to bypass it during crank to give the coil enough voltage to fire the plug well.
