Recently acquired Massey 1650 with 3pt and rear pto. Trying to fire and owners manual says 2 turns out on main fuel screw and 1 1/4 out on idle screw. However kohler manual says 3 1/2 on main and 2 1/2 on idle. Which settings do you members use? New fuel lines and filter and good spark.

I usually start with 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 turns out and adjust from there as needed, the same engine mounted on 2 different pieces of equipment might want slightly different settings. Or a different carb on the same engine and machine might have to be set slightly different from each other.

Got it running !!! Thanks guys. Idles good and runs great at wot but has a little stumble at mid throttle. Will let techron cleaner work awhile before I redo carb. Here's a pic as I found it in a falling down barn. I think I got a deal for 250 dollars with deck and blade.

I’d say so! Anymore the weights are almost worth that. I saw it for sale I was kicking the idea of calling about it. It’s a couple hours away so that was my excuse. But I’m glad to see someone got it who will appreciate it. To be honest, part of me wishes I would have called, it’s got all the goodies on it. Congrats on a good find.

The ultimate way to set the carb is by reading the spark plug color. After bringing the engine up to temperature and running it at speed, turn the engine off without idling it. Now remove the plug and look at the ceramic insulator. Correct adjustment will give it a light tan color. Lean will give it a whitish blistered look. Rich will be black.
