I have a 1982 Bolens QT 17 Model 1666 with a Kohler KT 17 Series II engine. I dropped off of a small hill and the mower deck bottomed out with the front left deck support hitting and cracking the block. Have not snatched it yet but, engine is still able to run, so may be salvageable. I have purchased a Kohler Magnum M 18 (shown below). It looks to be fairly close in size, and length on the crankshaft. Can I hopefully repower my machine with this without having to jump through a lot of hoops? Would appreciate some knowledgeable answers.

Have a Magnum 18 in a PK that was once a KT17. shaft same, bolt pattern for mount same. Depending on year you have, might have small issues with electrical hook-ups, but I doubt it. If you had batt ignition and going to electronic may need to change Key switch or vice-versa. KT 17's have no real lovers and even at tractor shows/swaps they leave those parts home. Hard to find important stuff to rebuild.

Tennessee, First off, Welcome to GTtalk. Glad you have joined us here. Is your KT17 a series 2 or 1? Series 2 engines are good engines and people are always looking for engine parts for them.

It is a Series II engine and ran strong, still runs . . . I shut it down as soon as I saw the oil leakage . . . will probably clean it, drill the ends of the crack, v-trough the crack, and cold weld it, and save the other engine for back up if ever needed and I can repair the original. Would like to keep it all original for the restore. Just wanted to know if I could repower it if the other block could not be salvaged. Thanks.

Thanks. I have heard that the Series II (2) engine was much more appreciated than the Series 1. Mine is a Series II. The Magnum 18 is electronic according to the paperwork that I have, where would I get a key switch to work with the electronic ignition?

Did it crack the block or the oil pan? You can replace just the oil pan.
