Hello GT Talk members! I'm new here but I hope to fit right in! :)

I have a couple questions about motors in these old JD's, I have a 210, and a 214 parts tractor at the moment, along with a 317 that's doing just fine. I wanted to try and put the 14hp Kohler from the 214 into the 210 as the 10hp Kohler from the 210 needs rebuilt. So does the 14hp Kohler, But I figured I'd like to get the 14hp going first, if it would fit in the 210 as the 214 was a parts tractor to begin with. So I guess what im asking is a couple things. Will that 14hp Kohler bolt right up to the 210? Both earlier model vertical shaft Kohlers. Also, has anyone rebuilt one of those before? any tips?

Any Help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Mason

Welcome to GTTalk. I'm not that familiar with the 200 series but I think the Kohlers have a common base size so it should mount. If you look on JDparts.com and do a model number search for the 2 tractors you can look at the parts diagrams. This will tell you if the belts, pulleys/ motor mounts etc are different part no's/ sizes. Since you have the 2 tractors it should be possible to swap any needed parts over and you should be good to go.

Welcome to GTT. You can check our manuals section for the Kohler manuals and download three for free per day. You can search our site for threads on Kohler rebuilding. OEM parts are expensive. After market kits are very reasonable(about $110 to $170) on EPAY. I plan to do several Kohler engines this winter. Good Luck, Rick

Welcome to GTtalk Dog!

Word of advice about the 14hp Kohler..

When you rebuild it, leave the balance gears out when you put it back together... (aka- Grenade gears!)

Lots of banter about those things and the shear carnage they cause..

Lot's of Kohler pros here so don't hesitate to ask questions!

I'm out!

JDparts shows the engine mounts are same on the 210/212/214's if in same serial number range so you "should" be able to swap from one to the other.

AM34866 BASE - 70000 (210, 212 AND 214)

AM36830 BASE 70001 - 80000 (210, 212 AND 214)
Use the base that is from the tractor you are installing in for the swap to ensure it goes easy.

it depends on the motor mounts

there are two different motor mounts - a two piece and a one piece

from what I remember the 10 hp, 12 hp and 14 hp are very close in design

sometime the oil pan are different - 1-1/2 qt or the 2 qt

you will have to make adjustments to work right - like the pto linkage

Thank you everyone! I will be sure to report back with any real progress. This will most likely be a winter project, so I may have more questions in time :) Oh, and I did mean Horizontal shaft.. can't believe I made that error.

Hi,

I just found this thread and looking for some info on 210 engines as well. I just bought a 210 with a 10hp runs but tired- I am looking around for a new motor to put in.

I found a K321 ( 14hp) that looks to be in good shape/ complete ( exhaust & carb), but think it was in something else possibly a pump. it is a horizontal shaft, but the dip stick for the oil is down low not up with a tube like on the 10hp I have- think that might be ok though could put a tube on it.

The price is good less than $100- but wondering if this will fit into the 210. The numbers on the motor are k321ep, spec#6056D.

I know the 214's used a K321- wondering if anyone can tell me if this motor would fit in there without having to change a bunch of stuff. Don't want to start cutting things up "butchering" things just to get it in.

Any help or thoughts greatly appreciated

thanks

so did a bit more researching on my end on the kohler# and seems that the ep means it was on a generator- so wondering if this would make a difference- in my thoughts about putting it in a 210 tractor?
Do you have any pics of the two engines in question?

I do not have any photos yet- of the motor in my 210- I believe it to be the original- 10HP- I bought the unit from the original owner.

It starts right up and runs fine, but its tired. My property is hilly so you feel it on the grade going up- its chugging. Not bad where its flat.

My thoughts were if the 14hp ( k321) was an easy swap I would pull the head, check to see what it looked like and if need be put a rebuild into it then swap the 10hp out. I could then rebuild the original motor if I wanted to have as a spare.

Here are some photos of the k321 I can get for about $75- Think it probably was on a generator- not sure. I have not seen it yet, but its suppose to run, and looks to be pretty complete. I am wondering if things like the starter, oil pan, etc are the same, or completely different. Even though its pretty cheap- would hate to get it, if it would not work. so obviously trying to find that out here.

I will try to post shots of the motor in my 210 over the weekend- not planning on yanking the motor until I have another one to put in, as it still runs.

Thanks for taking the time to look-

Best

Scott, the Generator Kohler is a old style belted Starter/Generator engine and the 210 should have a gear driven starter driving a ring gear made info the flywheel. I would also check the PTO side of the crankshaft DIA. to make sure it's the same as the 210.

Hi All

This thread sort-of fizzled out a while ago, but the story never ended...
Maydog96--- did the 14hp engine make its way into the 210?
Thanks to Trav1s and lyall for their follow-ups to Maydog96. I have a newly acquired 1974 110
with a smokey tired 8hp engine. Locally there are some parts tractors that still have decent
12hp and 14hp engines and I would love to put the 14hp in place of the tired 8!

Thanks!

Never saw a 'gold plated' Kohler before!!! :good_job: :good_job: :good_job:

The small K-series are fairly similar but the difference on the JD's is the oil pan. They can be removed and swapped between engines is the good news! There is a ton of information about the K series in this MANUAL

D/L it and save it to your Hard disk or a zip drive for future reference. I have had a paper copy of this for decades since I've been working on them quite a bit. As before there's lots of knowledgable folks hearabouts to help if you ask..

Tractor on!! :driving_big_tractor:
