My recently bought Ruggerini RD200-1 just after I started it up. It came off a genset with a bad armature.

Last week I gave it an oil change, serviced the oil bath air cleaner (Ugghhh!! What a mess!!), and pulled and cleaned the injectors. When I tried to start it, it would only rotate to a point, then stop, and finally move past. The starter cable was warm so I knew there was something keeping the engine from turning. I figured it may have some oil or fuel in the cylinders, but was out of time and had to cover it and wait for today.

Today I pulled the injectors once again and spun the engine several times to be sure nothing was in the cylinders. I then primed the fuel system by cracking open the fuel lines starting at the pump, then up to the injectors. Closed them off when fuel started coming out.

It fired up right away, but took about 15-20 seconds for the air to clean out of the injectors. Even then the exhaust had blue smoke in it, so I put some Sea Foam in the oil and also the fuel, including pouring some into the fuel filter.

I ran it for about an hour including 15-20 minutes at full speed (3,000 rpm). It still smokes, but not as much--probably due to the pistons warming up and sealing better.

The control panel said 900 hours and change, but I don't think it was maintained very well.

The thing vibrates a lot--like most 2 cylinder vertical engines... it kept sliding towards the side of the trailer I had it mounted on--even when clamped down.

I'm thinking of putting it in my 444 Case, though it's just a bit tall for that. Another good candidate would be a 646 Case if I could afford it, or an A/C 620, etc.

Anyway, we'll see what happens with it.

Sounds good Smitty, that looks VERY VERY similar to the Lombardini 10LD400-2 that is factory in the Allis 920 and Simplicity 7790 diesels. So that large frame tractor series would be an excellent one to stick on it. The gasser versions of the 920/7000 series can be had real cheap, parts are easy to find and even the implements are much more affordable over anything for a Case. I used to have a 446 and sent it down the road after pricing what it would cost to put rear lift, pto clutch and a tiller on it. Much easier to find Allis/Simplicity stuff in my area. Let us know what you decide to stick it in. Mikie

Very nice little diesel, Smitty! It doesn't sound bad. I always liked the way a two cylinder diesel runs.

Thanks for the info on the A/C machines...I'll look into them because, though I like the Case, mine is the short frame model and it's a gyration to get behind the wheel and sit down..

What are the model numbers of the gas versions--the 919???

I've checked this engine against several other Lombardinis and the 12ld435 is practically it's twin brother other than the Lombardini has an 86mm bore, and the Ruggerini has an 85mm bore--stroke is the same, and even the dimensions are essentially the same.

I haven't found a US source for any parts other than the oil filter, which is available through Wix and NAPA. I do have a repair manual and parts manual, and it shares many common parts with the RD 180, RD 210 and RD 218... in fact about the only thing different is the pistons, cylinders and rings...

Anyway, if anyone on the forum has any experience with these engines or Lombardinis, give me a shout... I want to find a parts source for gaskets, etc. so I can pull the heads, etc. The injector nozzles were caked with carbon, and I imagine the heads are the same.

Sure sounds good and might clear up after it's run with a load on it for a while.
Thanks, Chris. It fires right up--seeming even before one full revolution... that's one advantage of direct injection!!

I'm hoping it will clear up, but will probably run it anyway. Now I just need to find a way to make a 1:5 taper for the rear of the crankshaft. The PO threw the adapter away when he scrapped the generator, ditto the muffler, <sigh>.

Also remember that an air cooled diesel will smoke when cold and not under a load. They need a load to get cylinder temps up to achieve a clean burn. Mike
Thanks!! I noticed this didn't get very warm, even when I ran it for 15 minutes at high speeds... sounds like I need to find the right tractor to install it in and put it to work.

BTW, do you know where I could find an adapter for the 1:5 taper on the rear of the crank???

Thanks again,

Smitty, do you have the old gen armature? If so, you could cut off the end & build your adapter from it.
Unfortunately, the PO threw it away when he scrapped the armature...

It's a 1 in 5 taper... not sure if I could turn that on my lathe using my compound rest... also the shaft doesn't have a keyway, so I have to figure how to put one in it without pulling the crank. I haven't been able to find a source for parts for them, yet.

What is the major end diameter of the taper? Maybe one of us can find something. As far as a keyway, the taper fit is so good, I think just drilling a shallow hole & putting in a short round button pin to match the adapter groove would suffice.

I have had pretty good luck cutting key ways with a dremel tool. Half moon and straight. If you use the larger diameter fiber cut off wheels it doesn't take long. The thin ceramic wheels do not work.

Does anyone know if anything else uses this taper?

Take a look here and see if anything rings a bell. I don't know your shaft diameter but there are some adapters pictured here.

If this doesn't work for you the guy might be able to make you one that will.

Also did a search for "generator tapered shaft adapters" then images, a number of photos came up. I'm unable to transfer the address here.

Thanks, Chris... I wondered if that would work. I've also been wrapping my brain around how to cut that inside taper... it's only about 1" long, so it may be short enough I could do it with the compound rest on a lathe.

Thanks, Chris... there's quite a bit there, I'll see what I can find. The shaft basically tapers from approx. 1 1/2 to 1 1/4" over a 1 " length. One of the manuals I have said it's a 1:5 taper--I'll do the math and figure out what angle that is... I may even try the old method of turning a taper in a piece of untempered tools steel, then cutting half of it away, tempering and use it to ream a pre drilled hole.

Not to direct you away from this forum, but there is another called smokestak, lots of folks around the world working on vintage engines, old diesels included and they have thier own seperate forum for them. These engines are everywhere in the UK and Europe. best bet for parts is to join and post up over there and find a friend overseas to hook you up. That is what I have done for Lombardini and Petter parts that I needed. Mike
