My 1946 Bean Cutler originally came with a steering system that was cable operated.

These were not the most effective steering systems and someone already switched my tractor to a chain operated steering system.

My Bean Cutler is used mostly just for showing and it doesn't get driving very much so I have been looking for an original "cable" steering system to put back on it.

Well .. Thanks to a member here on GTT ( Jim Knutson ), I now have the parts for a cable steering for my Bean Cutler.

I was not aware of the unique steering wheel mount that they used for these tractors.

Here is the steering hub for the cable system.

There is a counter bored hole in the top and three notches around the rim.

The hub sets on a steering post that comes up from the frame and the steering wheel set down into the counter bore in the hub.

The three arms on the steering wheel set into the notches on the rim so when the wheel is turned it turns the hub.

Here is a closer look at the wheel and hub.

This is such a slick way of mounting the steering wheel that I don't understand why they didn't keep this type of steering wheel mount on the Ridemasters ?

The steering wheel Ridemasters are welded to the hub and it makes for a lot of work to change a steering wheel on them.

it is baffling why they would eliminate such an effective part. glad i could help Ray. it was a good deal for me too, as i plan on converting one of my Bean Cutlers into an actuall "workhorse" with a yanmar 1cyl diesel for power, with the updated chain steer i traded Ray for. the Bean Cutler i just picked up last week as a restoration to original, has the cable steer on it, so it worked well for us both.

Jerome, the bar is about 22 inch from outside to outside.
