Getting Deeper Into The '650

11962 Views 106 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Newpaws493
I recently got my first GT about a month ago,so I'm entering school here for the second day.
Hopefully my hits and misses can help the next newbie, so I'm bringing in my issues, which started on my introduction page. I've had my first consultation with Dr.Bolens and was attended by JDBrian during my first panic attack. Before I get elbow deep and over my head I'm gonna open this up to get my range of treatment options and proceed with a solid game plan. My mechanical skill is limited, so I'm looking for the best straight forward approach. Let's try not to bust a gut too much here, people...

Thank you x3.
I'll hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Today was the first I noticed this issue and I did change the oil a few days ago. haven't had it running much nor have I taken that famous first ride, I'll take it slow and do my studies before doing more damage than good. Not pocket ready or willing to take it to a formal shop yet and I think I should know as much as I can anyway.
Glad to be in the company of those who've seen action as well as inaction with these...Did not get much info from the seller as they
reported to have found it in a barn where it sat for who knows how long (+?-.) Probably done feelin' her up for today,
Thanks again.

Hopefully it won't get to this point...

Ask away! You are in good hands as there are plenty of knowledgeable Bolens guys on here that should be able to help you out.
Happy Friday guys, not sure if I'm gonna get anything done on 650 today, but I want to set up my game plan.
I had a look at what 'goodnews' was into and got the clarity moment of; this is what it takes to do it right.
Don't know how I had myself fooled into thinking I could just get one and ride away without a high degree of dedication
to the process.
Knowing that it's not going to happen by magic in the middle of the night, while dreaming, I'm looking for the first three steps
recommended for the novice who does not want to end up with just pieces everywhere and no clue...
Suggestions please...?

And do you guys 'name' your machines? I like the name Betty and don't know why.

It's been said that faith without works aint enough and today there seems to be far too many wrong minded things people are doin'.
Inspiration, the ability to take a breath on another glorious day and be of help should be promoted. I don't think I'm far off to think this spirit lives here at GTT. Bwell neighbor

"We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say "It's not my child, not my community, not my world,
not my problem." Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes."

Goodmorning guys yesterday I posted a request for words of wisdom on the next three step I should take to get my 650 project going on the right track given the symptoms I was experiencing on the 11th...I got this from my introduction thread and hope to revisit the issue(s) here.

Welcome! That's the crankcase breather. It vents fumes from the crankcase and sometimes oil. It could be a problem with the breather itself. There is a baffle of sorts and a filter in most of these and if the filter is worn out or the breather assembly is put together wrong you can get oil coming out the tube. It also could be from the engine being overfilled with oil. And last but more serious it could be blowby from combustion which is pressurizing the crankcase and forcing oil out the tube. This means you may need to replace the rings or do more serious internal work to the engine.
I spoke to a friend/ mechanic who recommended I try Mystery oil? as an option, can anyone weigh in on thi opinion..?

He is referring to Marvel Mystery Oil. I have a tried it a few times myself on various engines and it does seem to help clean out the engines and make them run smoother, but I am not sure that it would help with the breather leaking oil. Its either clogged/ dirty or you are getting too much blow by and the engine would then require some internal work (New rings, ect)

You can find the stuff at auto parts stores and Its pretty cheap so it wouldn't hurt to try it and see if that helps

Got the Tecumseh running today to my amazement! I did find the Mystery oil and put some in where I took the spark plug out. I left it in for about two days then gave it a pull start or three today. At first there was plenty of smoke and some oily discharge from the breather and I let her run, shut her down; checked, wire brushed and wiped plug put it back in. with some effort I restarted and then the smoothest practically smokeless run I've witnessed. (No discharge, no fire.) Got brave and mounted went in to gear, heard soft grind and a belt magically appeared on the ground next to me...oh nice. Trying to get vid ready.

Glad it worked for you

check your brakes as they may need replacing or adjustment if you are hearing grinding when shifting. Did the belt break or just slip off?

Thanks Doc, it seems to have slipped, condition is 'fair.' I've started to study parts on the HM100 and I'm paying close attention to members' restorations. I will look into the brakes in the morning.
Tried to upload a video...
What am I missing/lacking?

What format are you trying to upload? Youtube or something else?
Hey Doc, video was in quicktime format on my old computer and I tried to attach it as I would a photo, when I looked at the help topics it listed this icon: {

Well, In this case I think they were correct on them needing to be replaced. They probably can still be sharpened and used but due to the excessive wear on the ends it may create "striping" like you mentioned in your above post.

Out of all the Bolens deck blades I have seen over the years these ones are some of the most worn I have seen.
After review of two ongoing projects, involving mower decks; 'goodnews' 1054 Husky restore.. and mark843s' ...Rebuild.
I've decided to share the present condition of the deck that came with my '650. Brace yourselves, it ain't pretty...

I dont think quick time can be embedded into the posts......
Does quick time give you any link to embed onto the site?
