I have cut twice this year with my Snapper 1650a problem free and now have an issue. I just started it up and moved it maybe 6ft when I heard a horrible grinding sound that was consistent with the rpms. I shut it off, gave it a second , and then restarted. It cranked up fine and then the grinding sound began again.

Any idea what could be going on here? Where should I start?

Likely a carrier bearing on the hydro input shaft, or on the pto shaft up top. Had the same grinding on one of mine once. The factory bearings are harder to find now, plus expensive. You can change them over to std Ag machinery bearings & flanges.

If you find it's the rear pto power shaft & are not using it, at least for a while yet, then you can take off the belts that run that shaft and tend to it later. Then you can go about the business of mowing.

To get to the rear pto shaft bearing, it is tougher, and best to remove the rear fender pan. The front upper is like coldone said, plus remove the plastic tunnel cover off. When my pto shaft bearing went out, I didn't have time to mess with it, and being the belts were old, I simply cut them off. New were pretty cheap, 1/2 x 22" . BUT, don't cut them as you may have a mid shaft lower bearing out. Loosen the belt adjusters till you can slip the belts off & tie them up out of the way. You have to remove the lower shaft coupler cotter pin, slide the coupler back, then remove belt from lower shaft, then tie them up high. Put the coupler back into place with pin, then start her. If the sound is gone, then must have be the upper pto shaft with bearing issues. If growling is still there, then likely the carrier bearing on hydro input shaft.

Alrighty..

Got it apart and found the culprit. This coupler pictured below has lived its life.

Good side

Bad side

Now my task is to find a new or used one in good shape. Anyone had any luck sourcing this part?

I see the stock is now down to 2 at Surplus Center. I figure you ordered a couple?

This forum is great! A fellow has a problem, another tells him where to find parts, and he places an order.....All in less than 30 minutes!

Glad you find problem.

What's going to happen when the last two are gone? I ordered one back in the fall, there were like 80 in stock. Wonder if they will get more in stock eventually since htey seem to be popular.
