Been working this H 16 I got a while back and finally go the HH160 Tech to run decent. Once I got new belts on and released the idler it smoothed right out. The Hydro does not work smooth at all. When trying to go forward or reverse it growls, jerks and the motor pulls down. I did run it a ways forward thinking it might be air in the system as I changed the filter. Ran ok but lacked power when pulling up a little grade. Back down that grade it free wheeled until I pressed back on the pedal.

Reverse was real noisy, jerked and had a hard time getting it to move at all backward.

Checked the manual and nothing found on trouble shooting. Any one have any ideas as to the problem and how to correct it? Thanks much for any and all advise.

There is a Tecumseh/Peerless transmission manual in our Manuals Section. It may help. Good Luck, Rick
Only if it had one in it.... :poke:

Hopefully it's just air in the system. Also a plugged oil filter or the wrong one will cause big loss of power.

Not the filter as I put a new Baldwin on it. Right now it is dead in the water after running forward about 120 yds. Won't go either direction.

Got it up on the work table yesterday. Removed the seat and fender pan. Sprayed it all down with oven cleaner and let it sit about 25 min. Washed it down with diesel fuel, the blew it off with the long air nozzle. Got it up on jack stand and the tires off. Manual says you don't have to remove the unit to service the gears but you do have to slide it back about 1/4" to clear things. Removed the side cover and found everything inside as good as could be. Only gear that showed any wear at all is the small bevel gear on the Hydro output shaft. Still ride deep in the ring gear and has plenty of flat left on top so going to run it unless Bolens 1000 can come up with one. Will replace both seal in the hub before I put it back together. The unhook everything and slide the whole unit off the frame. I call my mower service guy and he said they work on hydro's all the time and will work on this one too. would like to have the Service Manual for it or at least the parts break down. Haven't found one yet but still have hopes.

At this point we are not going to have the Eaton 10 rebuilt. I found another tractor, H16XL with a dead motor for a good price. Going to put my motor in that tractor and go. Will probably part out the H16. Only problem going this route is I only have one attachment for the XL series tractors. Wanted to put the snow caster on the H16 but now will have to leave it on the 1053. Would have been nice to have the Hydro and the extra 6 hp for the caster but that won't happen now unless I come across a snow caster for the XL, hint, hint?

Bolt the 16hp into the 1053, I think it would fit?
Yes, it probably would fit OK. My reason for wanting the snow caster on the H16 was to have the hydro to be able to vary the ground speed and maintain constant PTO speed.
