After your grandparents went through the 29 stock market crash and the depression I can see why they would be reluctant to part with anything. My Dad was born in 1917 and his favorite Christmas memory that he used to tell me was the year he and my uncle received a truck as a present. It was one truck that they had to share. They used scrap lumber to build a garage for their truck. When they were older they bought a real truck together and hauled coal. They would buy coal from the miners running bootleg mines upstate and deliver it to their customers in town.
When you don't have a lot, you don't feel like getting rid of anything.

Pack-Rats unite!!! I'm the same way (when I have the room to be), my Dad's always been a Pack Rat.

I don't think of myself as being a Hoarder, I think of it as saving potential repair parts for future antiques.
Very well said. You never know when you might need it.

Yep its guaranteed that if you throw that "scrap" _______(fill in to your own liking) away, you will find that you need it two weeks later, then have to spend $ to replace it. I keep as much as I can around saves buying new.

Not to mention that when you do end up having to go buy it new, it's usually never as good as the old stuff you got rid of!
