I just rebuilt the engine on my 1220. The motor runs good until I engage the pto and then it strarts running rough. This was my first time rebuilding a small engine did I put something together wrong or is it a carb thing?
The engine runs fine when I am driving it around. I have a chipper/shreader attached to the mower. Before I rebuilt the motor, I took the carb apart and cleaned it. It leaks a little gas but other than that it seems to be in good shape. Maybe I should get a rebuild kit for the carb.
It sounds like a carb issue to me. Rebuild kits are not that expensive so I would give that a try
Did you do a complete rebuild? Rings, Connecting rod, Crank, Valves ect? If so did you break in the engine yet?? If you did a complete rebuild I would not have the chipper hooked up or apply any heavy load to it until the engine has been fully broken in.
I did a compete rebuild. The valves were not replaced, but they were lapped. The engine has had about an hour of run time on it before I hooked the chipper up. The only thing that I haven't checked is the valve gaps. I was going to do that today.
One hour of running is not enough to break in the engine. If the engine is not properly broken in you may have problems later on, Breaking in the engine allows for proper polished bearing surfaces and clearances.
Usually it is recommended that you first let the engine run 30-60 minutes at 1600-1800 RPM with no load applied to it, After that the RPM should be increased to operating speed still without load for an additional 3-4 Hours.
