I was using some of my go-to's to get some grime off from the afternoon's garage adventures and got to thinking... "Hey, I wonder what the guys do to get the grease off"
I usually use Boraxo (sometimes sub borax-shampoo mix), Gojo, or Lava Soap
Some of it depends on what is on my catcher's mitts, and sometimes it depends whats available.
All the stuff that shouldn't be used. BrakeClean, WD40, carb cleaner, and starting fluid. Usually whatever is closest to the rags. That is for the first layer. Always use dishwashing soap for the final layer.
Fast Orange out in the shop washed off with water. Then when I get in the house I use Lave at the deep 2' square wash tub where I can really get with it if necessary. After that a good go with the Corn Huskers and set till next time.
the orange and other citrus ones seem quite worthless/ between cleaners like GoJo and Goop it seems I have to switch off as it seems either works for a while then doesn't. I use a lot of Dawn dish soap... besides the Safety Clean parts washer, or a pan of gas, what ever's handy, sometimes lacquer thinner
Grandpa always had a can of Lustresheen by the sink. I use fast orange and Gojo, Dish soap, and if all else fails, shampoo seems to have a easy time with heavy dirt
Dawn dish soap and a small scrub brush. If it's good enough to use on animals after an oil spill then it's good enough for me. I have used gas and other harsh stuff but dawn is my go to.
I used dry cleaning solvent while in the Navy but that turned out to be a horrible idea as now my hands are a disaster, definitely clean but after years of medical treatment I can say I wouldn't do that again! Most products aren't what they used to be but what is? My question is what do you all use to stop the cracking hands issue? We use a small hand cream in a green tin called O'Keefes Woking Hands, only thing for the last twenty years that keeps my hands from turning into bloody stumps! Even the dermatologist was impressed and says to keep using it over the prescription meds I used to use.
Something that helps for me, when I go out the door to the shop is give my hands a shot of lotion. It soaks in first so that the grease and oil doesn't leach into my skin as bad.
A thought for you folks using Gasoline or solvents. Years ago I read an article in Cycle World that was written by an Internal Surgeon. He said he used to do the same thing (didn't we all?) until he started noting the damage that practice was doing to peoples livers and kidneys. He stated that our skin is not fuel proof and anything that goes on our skin will end up in our organs.
