I was imitating mybigwarwagon yesterday. Feeling like crap, congestion, sty burning my swollen eyelid, and a headache, I figured I might as well haul my load of scrap to the recyclers. I didn't bother separating anything, but at the yard they used the giant magnet boom, so most of the aluminum (dirty aluminum) stayed on the trailer. So I took it back with my cans & got a better price. I was about to toss off an old kitchen faucet, but the operator yelled to take it back as it would be yellow brass. The faucet brought almost $6 by itself!

Anyways, brought home a cool $454. $342 in steel (@ $220/ton), $64 aluminum, dirty extrud. aluminum, & brass. $48 for 6 car size batteries. Still feeling rough today, but also like Willie, I had a vehicle problem to deal with. Brake growling on my way home with my 97 F250 HD. Pulled the RR wheel & found the shoes totally down to steel. Shot to town & got shoes & replaced the one side today. I'll do the other side when I feel like it. :D

So he's rubbing off on you too, Daniel? Guess we'll be seeing another 'Adventures' thread going.

Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Seems to me, with prices of big truck parts now days that the Profits went into the brake job? OR, did you just add pads and not a rotor or turning? Many times dump runs end up with tires being poked and have that cost afterward! My local yard never buys for prices I hear on here and othr sources. But, not going the 25 mile long run to the Big City just for scrapping! Some old timers in area that is all they did for living. Couple even worked at the scrap yard too! Guess some can live with LOW standards?

Just brake shoes, and the drum was still in good condition despite the shoes worn to metal... and just $21 for premium shoes for BOTH back wheels!

This scrapyard keeps the drive cleaned with the magnet thingy real well. I have a yard closer to me (15 vs 27miles), but I quit going there because of driving over steel & putting a hole through a sidewall of a $200 tire

If the price of scrap was just $75/ton like it was not so long ago, I'd still take it off. We don't like the junk stacked around our place. Most farms around here still have every piece of old equipment they ever used grown up in weeds. I see no point in that at all.

Every body wants to be like Me. And what is wrong with late night homemade burritos - they keep your colon clean.

I like those old farms that keep everything especially when the heirs decide they don't want the junk. We cleaned up one old farm that the guy had horse drawn equipment under huge tarps. They all got donated to a museum. But we got an unbelievable amount of scrap out of there.

Daniel I hear you on the dirty scrap yard driveways. You have to learn to have a 6th sense about what you are driving over and even then sometimes you are wrong.

For soem odd reason if i carry a spare I have a flat. My spare has been sitting by the front porch for about a year and no flats. I am almost scared to put it back in.

Actually, I guess I said a non-truth above. If scrap prices fell to $75/ton, I'd haul it off alright, but just to an out of site & discreet location on our farm so I wouldn't have to mow around it or look at it all the time. Then when prices went back up....off to the yard it would go.

If I made my living as a scrapper, I'd love piled up farms too!

But I can never be you Willie....I could never eat livermush! :smilewink:

Congratulations Daniel. Glad you got the area cleaned up and made some money.

A question for you or William. Do you need to drain the water out of the batteries before you take them to the yard?

I don't have to. Not at any yards in my area.

Hope you're feeling better real soon Daniel. I haul off my junk too. Problem is that now and then the wife wants me to haul off the good stuff I have stacked by the shop. She can't see how you can fabricate a cretisrobin or whatchamacallit from a stack of steel.

Glad you got some $ Daniel, sorry to hear you don't feel well..

Hey, I have a suggestion, how about editing the title of this thread to be "The Adventures of My New Pitchfork"
I think the new title should be "How Baby Got a New Pair of Shoes"

Just what do you mean live with low standards? Are you referring to us workers or are regulars that we call junkers that work there ass off every day to put food on the table for there family ? This is where I work along my oldest son and two brothers my dad worked here until he retired. hitchcockscrapyard.com The third picture on home page is the high cab I run my son runs one of the rubber tired material handlers.Like they say a man gotta do what a man gotta do .I may not be rich I own my home have no car payments so I'd say I'm doing alright.
