Hi all, I have inherited a Bolens (1972) HT20 2087 tractor and having tried to cut the grass find that after about 30 mins and 1/4 of an acre the motor lost power and then stopped. It was ahot day and i thought it had overheated but since then it only runs for about 10 mins and stops. I believe they are air cooled and I have checked the oil levels all ok. I have about a 1/3 tank fuel but wonder if it could be the fuel filter although this looks clean. any ideas??

Glad to have you with us.

Your HT20 is probably a 1973 or newer ,as I don't think they were built in 1972.

Your trouble could be the coil breaking down when it gets hot.

Should be a 1973 or newer.
Fill the gas tank up and see if that helps the pump may be going bad.

The 2 suspects that I would chase down: First, make sure the vent in the gas cap is open! Second, Could be the coil breaking down as mentioned above. Try a lighted spark checker and see if it starts becoming erratic when it acts up.

Will it continue to run with the choke pulled part way out?
IF it will continue to run with the Choke pulled part way out It has either a Partly clogged jet or is in need of a fuel pump rebuild.

The choke could also help with a bad vent too.

If none of the above, could be something floating around and plugging off the tank outlet.

Glad you are getting all the help so quickly! Let us know what you find.

Welcome to the forum. I would check the fuel tank vent. It could be an electrical problem, coil or wiring or if it has an electronic ignition that could be breaking down. I'd check all the electrical connections and grounds.

This sounds nuts but for electrical, put an inductive timing light on it and see what happens when it dies. Worked for me!

Thanks guys really usefull. I will start with the easy bits (more fuel & then coil) and let you know what happens. Oh and the choke sort of works in so much as if I just want to drive it back to the barn I can blip both the choke and the throttle and it will splutter a bit but drive back to bed with little probs. I drove it with the cap off so the cap vent can be excluded as id didn't help.

Now that really sounds like your fuel pump. Pull the line after the pump and see if it has a strong flow. It is the easiest place to start.

atleast your engine isnt bad on your ht20 mine has a bad head, but it sounds like a coil. if it is your coil pm me and ill link you the CHEAPEST place for a new kohler k532 coil

Hi Guys, sorry for the delay...so many good ideas i took a while working out what to do first! I'm sure you are wondering so here it is. not the coil...fuel pump works fine...carb seems good...Turned off the fuel tap under the tank and took off the fuel filter to check flow (it looked clean but you never can tell) filter ok turned on tap worked fine for 3 hours...then stopped. turned tap off and on again and it has worked fine since. cost nil swearing and head scratching i expect you can guess.

so a huge thank you for all of the great ideas and happy tinkering to you all.
