JD 111, battery keeps dying---

7198 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  29 Chev
Hello,
does anyone out there know why the battery on my jd 111 keeps dying if the electric pto clutch is engaged.
previous owner had a 12 hp bs engine put in and says that is when his troubles started. he seems to think that the pto draws too much power so battery is not charging up? true? maybe this is so, since the 'parts' 111 i picked up today(with headlights and the clutch) also developed a problem-so the seller told me when- you guessed it, the same 12hp motor was installed a few yrs. ago.
any info on this would be appreciated. but a solution would be Greatly appreciated....
by the way, today we had a mini snow storm in my little town in Manitoba? what the he-----double hockey sticks?
go canucks!:anyone:

That charging circuit is possibly only good for recharging what you'd use after starting & possibly lights. How fast does it kill it? Would think you could run quite a while on just the battery, even without a charge.
usually at the end of a long stretch(more than 1/2 hr of cutting,) , or the next time it is used....., the battery just keeps getting weaker-run down...
if pto is not used all is fine......
I'd double check that the replacement engine has the correct alternator stator for your system. Briggs has several different ones with differing outputs. Charge can also depend on the number and size of magnets on the inside of the flywheel. B&S alternators can be identified by the connector coming from the engine. I don't know off hand which one you should have but with a little research you should be able to conclude this. Try this download link and see if it could help you.

thanks,
i did look into the different connector ends from stator-old one had a very light green but replacement engines in both 111's have the black and red.
so i assume not enough power for clutch,
and i read somewhere that the stator and flywheel can be simply put on to new motor. is this correct?
but, as always, i do not see any 'diodes' that are supposed to be inline.... here is a pic. of the 'parts' 111...
can i get these at the dealer(or somewhere che Tire Wheel Tractor Automotive tire Vehicle
aper perhaps?

Still sounds like a lower current charger system. Could the Diode be under the flywheel?
The only thing under the flywheel on these should be the alternator. All of the alternators should interchange unless you get into the Vanguard series possibly??? I recently swapped an Intek with an I/C flathead with no problem. The diode on my old 116 was near the solanoid if I remember correctly. Some of these are included in the alternator assembly wiring near the connector. If there is a "bump" near the connector this should be a diode.
If you run the tractor without the mower clutch engaged will it charge the battery? I wonder if it is charging at all. If you have a volt meter you can measure battery voltage before starting and then after a start. You should see the battery voltage rise when under charge. Is your battery healthy? If you have an ammeter you could see the net load on the system while running. If the meter reads negative when you engage the clutch then your battery will gradually run down and you need a heavier alternator.
thanks Brian and jdslednut,
i will look for the 'bump' in wire,
and i think i will install an ammeter(which i wanted to do anyway) and like you said, it should show me exactly what happens when clutch is on.....
and about the alternator swap----which is where i'm heading i think anyway, ---- i suppose the flywheel has to be changed as well?
again, thanks ,
You may be able to use the same flywheel. Just double-check the alt manual for number/size of the magnets. Inside diameter should e the same. Good Luck!
