I started having problems after towing it across the yard with my truck after head gasket blew. Being new to Garden tractors I didn't know there was a bypass vavle under the seat so I may have done some internal damage. I have checked the bypass since and it is fully closed but the hydrostat oil foams up and starts pumping out the fill tube after about 10-15 minutes now. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, it appears to have a pre 15 series hydrostat in it. Model 90-2052

I have not been able to locate any kind of service manual for this particular hydrostat.

Go HERE for a Bush Hog JB Manual. It has the identical hydro/diff unit, except control shaft is on top with the Bush Hog instead of out the bottom of the hydro pump. It's a simplistic manual, but does have a schematic for the hydro unit. Not sure why it would foam after pulling???

Manual calls for type A trans fluid, but Dexron III works fine. If oil looks milky, then likely just water contaminated & an oil change is due.

Just drained it and the oil is milky looking. Gonna fill her back up and try again. Cross my fingers and see what happens. Thanks for the suggestion and the manual link olcowhand. I'll post an update later tonight or tomorrow.

Check to see that you don't have a control valve stuck on float or stuck in the on position. Did you measure the fluid going in because sometimes they will get air locked and appear full when they aren't. I'm just clutching at straws here. Is there a vent that could be blocked? I hope it's an easy fix. I don't think parts are as easy to find for those units as the newer style Dana rear end.

Foaming usually comes from air going thru the pump. I think you have to have air getting to the pump somehow. Did you check all the fittings for tightness on all of the lines to and from the hydro?
