With regards to what Jazz and Shorty were saying about carriage bolts, I am wondering if that was just a common element at that time. I am rebuilding an older Bolens tiller (I am not sure on the year, but I would guess early 70's). It does not resemble the tillers pictured above at all ( shaft drive input to a ring and pinion gear with the ring gear driving the tine shafts. No chain case at all). All of the stamped steel pieces are held together with carriage bolts
