are these engines known for breaking rods. i had mine running today and it quit, it was idling and then it stopped, engine will crank but there is no compression.

With old equipment anything can happen and most if not nearly all the time it is related to how it has been treated and maintained (not saying you did it)

Could be a broken cam, rod, crank, valve stuck open

Did you take the spark plug out, you can figure out alot, feel for compression, is the piston moving

These motors like to stick valves. I would check there first.

Easy way to check for stuck valves is to take the cover off the side like you were going to set valve lash. Turn the engine over by hand and see if the valves go up and down. Just had to do this on a k241, stuck intake.

mike, i took the plug out and up until today it was burning black but when it quit it was a little bit of a tan color. looked like it was burning hot.

The black color is carbon due to too much fuel. Tan is what you should be looking for. Aluminum colored spots on the plug insulator usually means time to rebuild.

I agree with coldone about checking for a stuck valve but if it is either a rod or a stuck valve you will need to pull the head anyway.

well pulled the engine apart and the rod was in 7 pieces(not Good). now i'm looking at rebuilding it, does anyone know of any place that has resonably priced parts or kits, i'm also looking or a hi speed needle valve for the carb, i can't find one anywhere.

I have used the $82 kit from Bakt4kids. Have about 10 hours on it so far and no complaints. Make sure you download the manual here if you haven't already. One small thing to look for is the thrust washer under the governor gear. It sometimes sticks to the block and gets by unnoticed. Then gets lost while cleaning the block. Follow the manual, and be sure to run engine for about 15 minutes, let cool down and re-torque head. Kohler also recommends non-detergent 30w oil for 5 hours then switch to regular detergent oil.
