I've come across a Lister LT2 diesel engine that a guy bought for a boat, but never used. It's electric start, 2 cylinder vertical pistons, with CCW flywheel rotation when viewed at the flywheel end.

I haven't seen the actual engine, only a picture.

I've been able to find a repair manual, which lists a 3.25" x 3.0" bore, direct injection, plunger type oil pump, etc., but no mention of horsepower, torque, engine weight or dimensions.

I'm looking for an eventual repower of my JD420. Would this be a good choice? I think someone on the forum has used Listers to repower GTs, but can't find the link...

I found and uploaded a workshop manual for the Lister L-series engines, plus a parts manual for the LT1 and LV1 single cylinder versions.

Smitty, those marine engines are sometimes designed to run at lower rpms but will last virtually forever if maintained. Likely it will be bigger and heavier than a gas engine. If you can't find any info try a small diesel engine forum.

I found a British site that listed basics... 300 lbs,14 hp @ 3600 rpm... The workshop manual also gives specifics of the build code, but I don't know what that is.

I discussed it on PM with Cvans and it looks like it doesn't have the hp I would want for the JD420... oh, well!!

Not only that but the weight, 300lbs -that's a huge increase over the 125 or so of the Onan. I think 14hp would work fine for loader work but for PTO work like running a large deck it may be limited compared to a higher HP alternative. I think the most common repower kit for the older JD's is the Band S Vanguard V twins but the price is a bit shocking at 1500$ +! You'll eventually come up with a repower that works!

Yes, just running the loader, even 12hp would be enough, as I just run my 16hp Yanmar in my Massey at a fast idle when doing loader work, and it's plenty of power, but as Brian said, any pto work, and you'd be singing the blues.

I bet it would be a hard fit into the engine bay as well. At 300 lbs it's got to be a big beast.

The largest dimension is the height--approx. 19". It's about 18" square length and width...

There's a British company - DEV Engineering, that has info on them as well as builds parts for vintage engines.

Thanks for the info, Chris. I checked into it as the price was tempting. It's an Acme 740--built in Italy. Bought out by Lombardini, who was bought out by Kohler. The Acmes were good engines, but ran rough, and tended to crack frames on GTs if installed in them (per one of the parts sources I contacted). The parts for them are drying up as well since they are no longer built...

I'll have to pass on this one, though the seller also has a VW turbo that he bought for it, and wants to sell it as well, if anyone is interested
