All the gears on my 1200 work, but for some reason when you put it in 2nd it acts like there is nothing to hold it in the gear. If you hold the shifter itll stay in and does fine. But as soon as you let off itll go alittle way and pop out again. I was wondering how this could be fixed? Its been like that since i got it but id really like to fix it.

It sounds like you may have a problem in the shifter assembly. A broken detent spring maybe. I think, but I'm not 100% sure, that those tractors use the Peerless 2300 4 speed trans. You can download the Tecumseh/Peerless transmission manual and it has the info. needed to repair or rebuild the transmission. Heres a link to a bunch of manuals related to the 2300.

It's not bad at all, so don't be afraid to tear into it. More work getting the transaxle out & back in than anything.

I had the same problem on my 1200 and had the same fears.

I did split the axle and found the shaft that the balls ride against worn. I replaced the shaft, balls and one spring. The whole project with the axle removed took about 90 minutes. The biggest challenge was putting the axle halves back together. With the shaft replaced and new balls it stays in 2nd all the time.

Go for it nothing is lost by trying.

Well, The massey's sold. Ive had it on craigslist for awhile for $450. A guy called and came from 3 hours away to get it for his 7 year old boy to have. I really liked it but i came out pretty good on the deal. Oh well, on to the next! Thanks for all the help.
