I purchased a used Johnson front end loader to install on my Massey 1650. I had to get my welding machine out and remove the dust on it to make a support bracket but that is almost done. Has anyone already installed such a FEL on their 1650? I'm looking on advice for the best location for the oil pump. I was thinking about driving it from the front PTO but any advice on the best mounting location would be appreciated. If someone has a bracket design on hand I would also welcome it.

The Johnson was common on the '55 machines, both 16 and 18, so I would think it would be reasonable fit on a 50 as well.

On my 1855, the pump for the Johnson loader runs off of the front PTO. However, I don't think the 1650 has a splined front output, does it? My pump is located where I believe the mule drive unit on a 1650 would go. Do you also use a belly mount mowing deck with this tractor?

My 1650 has an electric front PTO. There's no room to mount the pump directly on the PTO shaft because there is not enough space between the front grill and the motor. I was thinking of making a bracket of some kind to install it where the mule drive would go just bellow the PTO pulley. No it doesn't have a mower deck. I have a snowblower that came with it but I bought this tractor to install a FEL on it and use it only for that. I already have a MF16 with a 54'' deck, snowblower and rototiller but that is my next restoration project...

I'm just getting started on the same project. The Johnson loader I bought was on a Wards GT and it had a setup that I think will work well with the 1650. There was a frame mounted under the tractor that the loader was mounted to. The frame was the length of the tractor and the weight box mounted to it on the rear, It used a mule drive like the 1650 to run a pump that was mounted on the frame in roughly the same place as the deck input. I'm planning on building a new mount for the loader and using the 1650 mule drive to run the pump. From my initial eyeballing its going to be a pretty tight fit on the 1650 width wise and will mount farther forward than it was on the Wards.

Well I can't figure out how to post pictures here. If you could find a front axle from a 1655 or 1855, it would be a simple solution. These axles have a bearing with a splined shaft/pulley built in. You run a belt down to it from your electric PTO on the engine. The hydraulic pump mounts to this splined shaft in front of the pulley, and has a little "arm" tab that keeps it from rotating. I have pictures to send if I could.

I really wish you were closer. I'd give you a good 1655 platform to swap your engine into and mount the loader on in exchange for your 1650 platform. You may consider looking for a 1655/1855 near you. The extra length, weight, larger tires, stability, and front splined PTO would be a big value added.

Either way, you may want to add some weld around the front spindles:

Some have had the spindles break at the welds here using the FEL.

Here is an option for you. This is the frame that the Johnson loader was attached to on the Wards tractor I just bought. I think the 1650 mule drive, with the correct length belt should work on a setup like this. I'm planning on building a new frame to mount my loader on and I think I'll just attach the pump to that.

Just finished attaching my FEL on my 1650 and mounted the pump below the front PTO. Everything works so far but I have a leaking cylinder so I'll have to take it apart to see what the problem is. When I have a little more time, I'll make a guard of some kind to protect the pump.

How's it working for you? You're going to want to keep a close eye on the steering box...even running ribbed fronts it's not made to last very long when turning with a loaded front bucket. Ideally you may want to start scrounging parts for a power steering conversion.

Here's some pictures of my oil pump bracket. I went with a very basic version using what I had lying around. I used two 3/8 inch thick steel bars to mount the pump. It does the job. I'll paint them next summer when I have more time and will probably also paint the loader.

I haven't used it a lot. I'll use it this winter removing snow. The big test will be next summer when I use it to move some dirt in my yard. I'm already looking at a 1855 that I might get and move the loader on it. I think the 55 series is a little more robust on the front end.

You might want to put a clip on the mule drive pin,help it from vibrating and bending your brackets and wear on your belt. just my .02 cents.
