I bought a Massey MF1650 garden tractor and started the mechanical repairs/alterations that I wanted to do to it. I also had a parts MF14. After looking at both, I decided to marry the 2 together, putting the dash, hood & front grill off the MF14 onto the MF1650. I didn't take pics of the entire process, but can walk you through most of it with available pics.

First thing was to install a 20HP Onan engine, but unlike the 1655 & 1855, I wanted to keep the engine directly shafted to the hydro transmission. This involved cutting the chassis rail & dropping it almost 2" to align the shaft to engine. I welded in gussets to strengthen the new joint. If you look to the left of the oil filter you can see the dropped joint.

Another major part was the adapting of the dash, grill & hood from the MF14. Without "during" pics, all I can show is after installed. Had to cut some metal in the 1650 dash area, then weld in tabs for securing the dash. Front of the chassis just needed tabs welded on to hold & raise the grill, which of course holds the hinged hood.

The 3rd addition was power steering. I bought a PS Valve body with short column and welded in bracket to hold it. Was a challenge getting hose routing inside the narrow MF14 dash. The cylinder I used for the steering is the mid mount mower lift cylinder from the MF14. I lathed a new cylinder body end cap & fitted an eye joint to it, and on shaft end simply screwed on a heim joint. At first I retained the bell crank under the engine, but having too many joints created too much play in the system, so I added a bracket in front of the axle beam so I could connect cylinder direct to the spindle control arm.

By adding the Onan engine, I had no room for the original tank and had to go with a small 1 1/2gl tank....not big enough. So I finally learned how to use the TIG welder & welded up my own tank which holds 3.3gl. Some of the welds look pro, other seams not so, BUT, it holds fuel tight. Found a place to sell me the fuel filler neck. BUT to use this new large tank, the battery had to move...but where! So I moved it behind the bumper, under the grill. If you notice the tie rod on the front, this pic was taken just before I moved the steering cylinder to the front & tie rod to rear...went through a learning curve on the steering & the Ackerman angles.

The front bumper I built to hold these "Jinma" weights I bought. I have another set on my JBI tractor also. They bolt to a plate on their rear, so no moving around at all.

Here are finished pics when loader was still attached. After switching loader to the 1655, I also changed the loader to dual tilt cylinders. Most things seem to evolve with the years.
One pic in in local parade. My Dad is on our Minneapolis Moline that looks like I'm gonna scoop him up in my bucket. I'm hoping to take this "2050" to at least one plow day this spring or fall....hopefully both seasons.
This outfit sure can work! I dug an 18" deep ditch for tile beside my house. The bucket sheared up the sod so easily & I just laid it back till ditch filled in, then used loader to lay the strips right back in.
Then the real reason I built the loader...cleaning calf stalls. Arthritis made it painful using a pitchfork, so I found a "better mousetrap"!

Why didnt massey do this in the first place? I mean that thing is MEAN looking! What if I took an ff20 an stuck a 60s suburban hood and grill on it. It would look awesome.

Nice job Dan! You were throwin' around a lot of foreign terminology there in the power steering post (to me anyway) LOL. A very useful and good lookin' machine!

Just look at the pics then! LOL Yep, kinda hard to follow what I say, but the pics tell it easier.

I've run into a similar problem with the repower on my MF7 with the 9 hp Tecumseh OHV. I'm thinking of moving the battery to the front of the engine compartment so I can put a fuel tank where the battery used to go. I wish I had a TIG setup as it would be easier to build a tank than it has been to find something that will fit.
