No manual,but the way I do it is to first loosen it to where it slips, and let it slip for a few seconds to slicken things up, as they tend to rust-weld themselves. Then once slipped a bit, I tighten in sequence equal turns until the springs are engaged, then equal turns in until about half the spring clearance is used up. Then I go to the garden & till deep. If it doesn't slip at all, then I lessen the tension till it just slips a bit, then re-tighten each 1/2 turn.
