I was not able to find a stock gearbox so I decided to go a different route. I bought a Hub City model 150 gear box 2:1 ratio. I had a friend make me a 1" shaft from the clutch out to the sprocket, the original shaft was too long and I didn't want to alter it, he also made me a new 1" diameter hub to replace the hub in the clutch, he made me two plates for the top and bottom of the box. Now I am going to pick up some parts and make me a sleeve side shaft for the pto. The gearbox bolted right up as there were holes for the 4 1/4" box. I have a shaft that worked for testing that came off the snowblower that I put a 1" diameter yoke on but the shaft doesn't go into the sleeve far enough for my liking to be used to actually till anything. I do have another gearbox but I want to keep it for the day I sell all this stuff so the buyer will have an original gearbox also. Anyhow here are some pics of the progress I have made. There are pics of the old gearbox and hub from the clutch I already put the old shaft away in storage

Looks really nice. My Bush Hog tiller had a busted gear box shaft and bad seals, so I made a new shaft and bought seals. Later I found a Hub City gear box on eBay NOS and for dirt cheap. It was identical to my box. I passed on it as my repair was sound and I was broke at this time.

I was able to buy the yoke and tube assembly from Thiesens for $59.99 plus tax and shipping so I am just waiting for it to arrive

When the gear box on mine went I didn't come up with a solution to fix it. It was a busy time of the year so I ended up buying a different tiller to fit onto my SCUT. Eventually I sold the MF 1655 along with all the attachments so not sure what the person who bought it ended up doing. Your way is a fix for anyone else who has on broken gear box on the MF 4850 tiller's.Thanks for the idea, and solution to get these heavy duty tillers back up and working.
