I have a 1972 MF14 with the Kohler K321S. I'm trying to fiqure out the governor. I can't fiqure out how the return spring for the carb goes. I think mine may be missing. I've tried to look up part diagrams and they don't show them. It seems the smaller k-series have some sort of return spring on the shaft coming out of the motor, should mine? :confuse: By the way I'm currently restoring it, I'll try to some pics up soon.

I might be wrong here, but I don't recall any return spring on the shaft.
Here is a picture of the setup on one of mine before resto.
Have you downloaded the manual from the Kohler website? Very helpfull.

I have an 83 jd 314 with a k321 and there is no spring on the shaft. Only a long coil spring similar to the one in the pic above.

Yup that's the same setup as mine. The previous owner had a solid link where the spring is. I ran it like that but had to watch the rpm's. I picked up the proper spring at a local small engine shop. I also just had the motor rebuilt so I haven't had the chance to fire it up yet. I put the spring on and when I throttle down to the idle setting ( engine not running) that the linkage won't push the carb to its idle stop, close but not all the way. The linkage just seems to push into the "hooks" of the spring. There isn't any binding on the linkage. That's why I thought there may be an idle return spring. I'm going to download the Kohler service book but I might not be able to work on it until this weekend. We'll see how it goes. Thanks everyone for your help.

If the idle was set really low for some reason it may not be able to reach the stop. You'll have to see how it behaves when you run it. With the engine rebuilt chances are the settings will be different.
