I got this one last year, and finally this August got around to

tearing it down. Since then I've done the fixing, straightening, cleaning,

sandblasting, priming, and painting. The engine was good so I decided

to do nothing other than clean and paint, at this point. A few issues that had to

be dealt with are: new axle seals, new front axle pivot bushing/pin, and welding

up cracked hood/fender and tunnel tin.

When I got it, it had the fuel tank mounted outside the hood, and a hydraulic

pump/valve installed in the fuel tank's area. It powered a dump trailer.

I took that out, and build a self powered dump trailer.

As for the upgrade part of this project, I'd like to add a hydraulic powered sleeve

hitch. I'm still scratching my head on that one. I have some pumps, cylinders, hoses

and "too big" valves. So, I could V-belt power the system.

I also have a 12 volt power pack used for trim tabs on boats. I've been wanting to

try doing something with it. It might be a bit slow, but so what.

I plan on plugging away at this project, during the real cold days over the next

while.

Sounds like you are making good progress. I'm looking forward to a good hydraulic build thread, I'd really like to do something for my working Masseys along those lines.

I was looking at the yellow and wondering why Massey went with that color. I know the early "little gray Fergies" were gray, and I think the Massey-Harris were red at that time. It would be kind of neat to see a little gray lawn tractor!

Sounds like a good project to follow. All the years I had a boat I never thought of using that on a GT. I think you could get it to work, who cares how long it takes right. Will be watching Will.

How about putting the hydraulics back on and mounting the fuel tank under the seat and using a fuel pump?
Yes Kris, that's a possibility. Only down side is that the pump is on my trailer, and

I use it all the time. I've got enough other stuff laying around, I should be able to

come up with something. Today I came across a power trim unit off a 115hp Merc

outboard. Tested it, but no go, so I took the motor off. One of the magnets was cracked,

and the oil seal had failed and filled the motor with hyd oil. It would have been perfect.

I have a theory about the yellow paint.

The Executive series of tractors where the first GTs that Massey marketed.

If you look at the brochures for them, it looks like they where targeting

the corporate crowd of the time with the "Luxurious" Exec. Heck, the guys

in the flyer are wearing Leisure Suits, Tweed coats, and smoking pipes.

Massey's industrial line of tractors, forklifts, dozers etc, where also

yellow. Maybe they where trying to put something out there that the

corporate execs could relate to. Just a thought.

Or maybe they just had a lot of yellow paint. :D

I've been thinking about the hydraulic upgrade to the sleeve hitch, and

been looking around at what goodies I have available to use.

Going with an electric (12 volt) power pack of some sort, is not the

answer. There is only room for the 1 small battery on board, and I don't

want to run into power issues later. Finding enough room to mount a belt

driven pump, reservoir, valve, and cylinder, could be tough too. Not much

extra room available in this smallish GT.

I came to grips with these 2 realities, once I came across this pump.

I think it'll work out Ok, if I make up a nice bracket, and mount it

behind the seat like this.

I'm pretty sure there is enough room, to squeeze a single acting cylinder

on the left side, under the tunnel tin, and have it pull on the lift linkage strap.

Sorry Howard, no fancy fanagled hydraulics going to be attempted here.

No room for a small pump, power steering pump?
My Executive has a less than sanitary setup like you describe, Doug, to power the blade up and down but it works and has been trouble free for well over 20 years that i know of. I think Will is familiar with my crude setup.

Boy Will you don't waste any time.I think you did a complete tractor and started this one since I started my 140.Looks good so far.Do you know what brand those wheel weights are that are in the before pics?I have a set and wasn't sure what brand they were.

Those are Moto-Mower weights, I think. I recall, there are markings or #s on them

and I investigated them last year when I got the machine. Also, they look as shown

in Agcopartsbook, and in the MF8E operators manual.

I think maybe those latest pictures I posted have you thinking I've been busy. Not the case.

I started this one in August. The last complete tear down I did was Elf, a year ago.

Yesterday, I remembered, that I forgot to do something. So, prior to

painting the tunnel cover (last pc to paint) I set it on the frame, because

I had wanted to make up some extra mounting brackets for it. As it was originally,

it wasn't very well secured, hence it tended to get bent/broken and cracked.

That's when I noticed all the room ahead of the shifter, under the tunnel tin.

So, I got back to thinking about a hydraulic pump and reservoir, as there

would be enough room in there. I went hunting in the goody building

again, and found this nice little hydraulic pump. Direction of rotation looking at

the output shaft is clockwise. That makes it more challenging.

For now, I'm going to carry one putting it back together while I try to

figure out how to drive this pump.

However it's driven, I feel it needs to be clutched. Getting these Kohlers

rolling over fast enough with the starter/gen is hard enough, without

trying to turn over a cold hydraulic pump.

Edit: The pump is a HC P100. I can't find anything about it on the WWW.

I was looking to see if it's reversible. That would make things sooooo much easier.

I couldn't come up with any ideas on how to drive

this P100 pump, without putting in a jackshaft, and using

2 belts/4 pulleys. Too much stuff taking up what little room I have.

So I went back to the goodies building, and found I had one of these pumps.

More pump than needed, and bigger. As I was searching online to see

if it could run in reverse, I came across this one. Perfect. With the valve too.

It's on order. 2 weeks to get here across the border.

So, here is the game plan. Green lines=mounting plate for pump.

Red=I'll double up the pulley, and drive a 4" on the pump.

Purple=pump/valve. Blue=reservoir ahead of pump under frame.

Black=control handle/linkage to look sort of like original lift handle.

Red=cylinder (I have) fits nice along side frame.

Nice. So let me get this straight. Double pulley on the transaxle to run a second belt forward to the pump? You do know that you will only have hydraulics when the clutch is engaged, right? So at the end of the furrow you must remember to lift before you clutch. Of course in neutral you could get your hydraulics too. Oh, is the tank full level going to be higher than the input on the pump for priming?

Looks like a pretty well thought out idea Will, good questions too Casey.
The fact that you will only have hydraulics when the clutch is out is actually very much like the earlier tractors with hydraulics The TO20 and 30 ferguson tractors were that way, PTO and Hydraulics would only work with the clutch up. Wasnt until the TO 35 that live hydraulics and live power found a home.

It will take some getting used to to use and a lot more shifting in and out of Neutral when using it, but it sure beats not having any Hydraulics or pumping it by hand. Interesting work around for not being able to reverse the situation and run a belt off the motor.
