Hi guys. I am new to this site and garden tractors in general. I have had a few MTD type riding lawnmowers, including my current one that needs a new ring gear on the flywheel. My wife decided to check online to see if she could find another cheap mower. I was paying no attention at all, figuring the old one would be easy enough to fix. Then she says to me here is one, a Bolens 1054 with a 36" mower deck in good running condition for $225. Bolens tend to go for crazy prices around here, so I was skeptical. I asked her "how bad does it look?" and she said it looked pretty good to her. At this point I was somewhat interested, so I checked out the picture and... it did look pretty good, but no deck in the picture. So I decided to call the guy and ended up having a long conversation with him. Turns out it did include the deck, it just wasn't installed at the time. I also found out he was the original owner, his wife bought it for him as a fathers day gift in 72 after their first son was born.

So I went over and looked at it and ended up paying $200 for it.I got a box with a few spare parts, all the original manuals and a Wisconsin Engine manual as well (not the one that came with the tractor). It had been sitting unused for a few years, but stored indoors. I have had a few mechanical issues with it since it came home with me, but nothing too major. I found this site soon after and have been reading through a lot of old threads. I was very surprised by the number of attachments available for these machines and impressed by the knowledge of the members on here. I bought this tractor initially just as another riding lawnmower, but I already see myself buying a tiller, and a sleeve hitch and a few attachments for that and maybe making a pto drive setup for my cement mixer and...

Welcome to GTT. Sounds like you are off to a great start. Couple of tips: grease the steering religiously (especially under the steering column); learn the proper use of the differential lock(in the left rear wheel center). In our Manuals Section is a shop manual for the tube frames. Share pics with us, ask questions and enjoy a fun hobby. BTW you owe her big time! If she likes it you will have to get her one. Good Luck, Rick

We have several sponsors to get parts from.

This is a helpfull manual that you can download: http://gardentractortalk.com/forums/files/file/2967-bolens-med-tube-frame-service-manual-552875-1/

Welcome to GTTalk!

Now that I've been civil .....

Around here, we have a saying ... PICS or it ain't yours :rolling:

Sounds like you got a great deal there, and you are right about the tube frames having a lot of attachments available for them.

It's always interesting to hear the comments of people when they first 'discover' a Bolens.

Thanks Boyscout, I tried to download the manual you linked to, but I still have restricted access. After this post goes through I can probably get it. I will try to pot up some pictures then too.

Thanks to you too old buzzard. I think I was typing this when you posted.

AWOL, I am just outside of Coldwater Ont, about 1/2 hr north of Barrie. I am attempting to post pictures now. The red one in the second picture is my MTD with the bad ring gear. It is a 12hp Briggs and the flywheel has plastic cooling fins and a plastic ring gear. Anybody know if an older all steel flywheel will work?
