Hi,welcome aboard, you want to use 90 weight gear oil for the transmission, there is a plug on the back of the trans axle (upper part)take it out and fill there till it starts to seep out,put the plug back in and your ready to go,as for the engine a lot of guys use a 10-30 blend because of temperature differences, cant remember off hand the amount,I'm sure there will be some other thoughts here, alot of good guys here to steer you right

Welcome to the GTT forums !

Here in the USA we may have different oil specs than in your country. ......For your Bolens we suggest SAE90 gear oil with a GL-1 rating. ....This gear lube will not attack the brass/bronze gear and bushings in your transaxle. .....Some of the higher GL ratings will attack "yellow" metals.

Several automotive oils are suitable for your engine. SAE 20, SAE30, 10w30, 10w40 are OK.

The grill was part of the hood, it looks like someone did some custom grill work(cut the hood up) on your tractor and you will need to replace the hood to fix it I think. It looks like the Headlamps also have been modified into the stock hood.

The grill has been cut away, should look like the picture below. I didn't notice the headlights till Fonz mentioned it. They may just be attached somehow through the original round holes. I prefer to keep my tractors original, but those do look like they belong there. Sorry for the crappy picture, it was the best front on shot I could find/

Hei, og velkommen til GTT!

I too bought a Bolens 1253 a few months ago and am interested in watching this thread to see how you go about restoration. Mine hasn't been touched since I bought it (not running). I was also pleased to see that you are Norse! While I am not from Norway, I am Norwegian on both sides of my family. My aunt was born in Norway and I have relatives in Bergen and Stavanger. I visited your country in the 1980's and was so impressed with it. You speak great English - far better than my Norwegian for sure (and, yes - my greeting was courtesy of Google Translate...)

You have a good looking Bolens, but the color is all wrong as noted by Jim in Canada. I have found that International Harvester White is a close match for the color of the 1253 and that IH Farmall Red is a very close match for the wheels. Both of these colors are easily available in spray cans, at least in the United States. If you want to see how these colors look on a Bolens, look at my 1886 on my profile. Oh, decals are also available here in the US. I can send you some links to sources if you want.

I am also missing my air filter cover, but haven't really looked for one yet as I won't be working on my 1253 until later this year. Good luck finding one. I'll PM you with some ideas for replacing it if you want.

I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures of your Bolens as you work on it!

Jim

I live 70 km from Oslo, south east.
Here are some pics, need some work, but everything works so far ;)
Need to bulid a snowplow for IT, cant seem to find noe here...
It's always nice to see machines so far away. I had a lay over in Oslo when I went to Tromso to visit my dad. Very nice there I hope to go again someday.
You should be able to find all the info you will ever need to keep your machine running.also you should be able to find lots of parts.

Wondering how your search for the air filter cover is going? I decided to go with a temporary fix on my 1253 air filter by buying an air filter breather tube for an LME carburetor and attaching an aftermarket angled 40 mm cone air filter with a rubber neck. I'll let you know how that arrangement works when I get it hooked up. I decided to do all that after finally installing a new aftermarket fuel pump on my machine. I jumped it with my truck battery and it started for the first time! That is always a good feeling...

Now I'm going to town and buy a battery for the tractor so I don't have to jump start it again.
