I started painting the Wisconsin engine for the 1050 yesterday with Semi-gloss black heat paint with the intention of painting brown over it. I cant decide if I want to leave it black or continue painting it brown.
Black will offset the overkill use of brown paint Bolens did, but brown is original and correct for this restoration.
What do you guys think?

I'm a bit of a purist myself, so I'd say to go ahead and paint it brown, However it is yours.

:ditto:

I am a purist as well.

I say you should paint it brown.
I was also afraid of using the Bolens brown because they didnt have the color in the hi-temp.
Out of the 3 engines I painted brown(non heat paint) none of them have shown sighs of peeling/bubbling up.

I didnt go high end... I used a simple Rustoleum paint.
Leather Brown looks the closest to the Bolens color, but I usually get my Rustoleum custom mixed to get an exact match. This particular color I used in the pics was called "French Roast" (I recomend not to use it) as it was not the color I was expecting.

I've been using leather brown on the tractor frame, I think painting the engine brown is the right choice.

If that's how "you" feel, then yes, it is the right choice! I like OE too, but firmly believe in doing with your own stuff the way you like it to be.

I almost painted the engine in Dad's Bolens 1053 just to help break up the monochromatic affect of all of the white and how easy white would show dirt especially on the engine. I ended up painting the engine with high temp white and I am glad I did. Once it was all together and the striping on the hood and the decals it just looked right.

One has to realize that if the factory painted the engine black, then brown would look wrong. I painted a Massey 1650's frame flint gray instead of red & everybody liked it better....myself included. Sometimes varying actually makes something stand out among the crowd.
