I'm trying to fix my Massey 1855 with the original B48M that has stopped getting fire. I've checked all the little stuff (I think), and it's time to start replacing parts. I ordered new Champion plugs, and a Points Saver device to wire up that eliminates the condenser: http://kirkengines.com/#Products

I'm trying to place an order now for points, plug wires, and a coil. It appears that the spark plug wires are not interchangeable between points ignition systems and magneto based systems...why is this? I found these wires: http://onanparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=317 that work with breaker point ignitions, but also have the screw on type end for the coil. I found this coil: http://onanparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_16&products_id=146 but it is not compatible with the screw on ends. Does anyone have advice on a good quality coil and plug wires that are compatible?

Only way your going to be able to get a good Onan coil for under $100 is to ether buy a used one for around $40 like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/JOHN-DEERE-420-ONAN-B48G-COIL-/161196948083?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2588163a73

Personally I would do the conversion to the Harley coil.They spark a bit hotter and last alot longer.They won't boil like the original oil filled Onan coil when they get hot.

The wires on my B48 are from a points style auto, looks like they came from Autozone at one time.

They probably won't interchange with mags cause most magnetos I've ever seen, the plug wire is molded/sealed into mag. I've also heard of guys mouting two separate coils and hookinghtem together somehow ( just cause they had them I guess), sounds like something my cheapo butt would do.

What is a "resistor" type spark plug wire that seems to be necessary with a points ignition system? The Harley Davidson coil is a good find...thanks!!!

Resistor type plug wires are about all you will find on the shelf most places. They are a carbon composite and they became popular as a way to eliminate Radio Noise, cross firing, EFI, and EFI caused computer issues. It's why all cars today have resistor wires.

Gotcha...so any automotive wire can be used on these tractors? That's great...

I suppose they can be. I don't usually do it unless its electronic or something.
If I am working on an old tractor (Pre electronic ign) I try real hard to find non suppression / resistor wires. I have always felt the old stuff ran better on copper.
