Hello Guys,

Its been a years or so since I found you folks and joined youre site and I wanted to get into the loop more with you but my dad got sick and I made spending time with him my main goal. He's in a better place now and I'm back to working and playing on Qt-17.

Its a great machine and the old girl never gets any down time. This past Maine winter was a real old fashion winter and the Bolens never let me down. I've finished tilling the gardens and now I'm trying to keep up with mowing about 1 1/2 acres of pasture.

So heres the problem I've been having. where the front of the mower deck hooks into what they call the Bolster (it goes around the front axle) the are 2 tabs that are cast into it and the mower deck hooks into it. One tab broke off and it looked like it had been welded by the previous owner. I have a mig welder so I welded it back on twice now and that ones holding up and the other side just broke off. I can see by the rust that it was cracked for a while before it broke off.

Any of you folks had a simaliar problem? I guess an arch welder might give a stronger weld. Do you suppose the mower deck could be binding up.

I'm not sure what kind of life the tractor went thru with the previous owners, I'm thinking they may have beaten on it a bit. I called around to the folks you listed for parts and I found a few of them, one was $250 and the other was $350. I hate to spend that kind of money and brake the tabs off. I'm just not sure if I'm doing something wrong when I hook up the mower deck. It seem to go on easy and line up with all the points when i put it on.

Any insite would be great. Thanks

Sorry to here about your dad.
Are those "tabs" you are talking about on the front axle? If those are the ones you are talking about,MIGS don't weld cast very well.
It's not that a stick welder is stronger, but you can use rods like ni-rod and such to do the job right.

:ditto:
Cast can be a real PITA to get a good weld on

Thanks for the input I guess I should try having it stick welded. I wasn't sure if you could really weld cast items. The tabs are not on the front axle. This Bolster as they call it is a "U" shaped casting that fits around the front axle.

Howdy,

I have three QT-17 with one that was abused for years running over lumpy terraine cutting grass. None of them failed as you described. You should be able to get a used assembly really cheap if you find the right guy.

Good Luck
