Good morning everyone,

I now have a bigger problem than last month(life's story). My 1970 Bolens Husky 1257, 14 hp engine is rapping terrible. I don't know if I can find parts to rebuild it or if I should just look into re-powering it. I hate to pull that old 14 hp Tecumseh and just can it. I guess I'm just looking to pick your brains and get some feedback on this. Have any of you ever re-powered one of these and if so with what? Do any of you know of where I could get a complete rebuild kit for this engine. Any feedback at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike

I won't be able to help much from the mechanical perspective but as a fellow GTTalk member from the Great State of Maine I will be cheering you on. I live here in Winthrop, ME but work in Waterville (part of the week) and Wilton (the other part). I work for a mental health agency that provides home based services and when I first came to ME I lived in Strong and Bethel was in my catchment area so I know the area well.

You really can't make any decision until you take that engine apart and find out whats wrong. Then contact some of the specialists listed here as sponsors and others to see what your options are.

Rebuild parts may be available. NOS parts are still out there. I have found NOS obsolete parts at old dealers that had them hiding in the back. The younger guys weren't interested in my problem but, I talked to the old guy that hung around(owners dad). He went and found them in a box way out back.

As far as I know, Techumseh parts are still fairly readily available, despite the company having gone under. (Seems all that is left these days is Briggs and Stratton or Kohler...) I think it is a lot easier and probably cheaper to to rebuild a Techumseh than a Wisconsin for sure. I know I have purchased carb rebuild kits, recoil starter assemblies, mufflers, and other parts for both the Techumseh engines I have on my Ariens snowblower and my Craftsman lawn mower. I can even get the parts for them at my local lawn and garden power equipment shop from the same people that frequently laugh at me when I ask if they can get any parts for my Wisconsin engine... :tapping_fingers:

As far as complete engine rebuild parts, that might be a bit of a different question than more frequently requested parts like carb rebuild kits. However, they should still be pretty easy to get I would think if you call around. If you look into the engine a bit you might find that you just need some new valve seats and possibly some new valve springs or at worst new valves. Unless it is really bad, you usually don't need to replace the whole piston, crank, or connecting rod. Might just need a block honing and new rings at worst. But of course, this is all just speculation until you get it apart. Good luck with whatever you decide to do with it.

Open it up and take a look. The original is worth repair %90 of the time. Personally, I like to stay original if possible or feasible.

if its a 1257 it should be 12hp not 14 unless it had a repower in its life already
