The B43G in my 1983 318 is starting to smoke and use quite a bit of oil. Was thinking of doing a rebuild on it in the next month or so and wondering where to get a rebuild kit, if available.

Any advice on this and what to look out for and what to make sure I do when working on it would be greatly appreciated.

Any Cummins engine dealer can get you the parts as Onan is part of the Cummins engine group. Hold on to your wallet, Onan parts are not cheap, not that its getting any cheaper to rebuild a flat twin of any brand these days. Onans are still a really nice engine, make sure to pay extra attention to your work as you measure and reassemble, just as you might with a car engine. Onans are a bit more picky to proper and complete rebuilds where you can do a "quickie" on a K series Kohler and have it run great. Mike

I rebuilt mine last year. rings, bearings, gaskets came from the local John Deere dealer, found a ring gear online, much cheaper then the dealer. Project worked out very well, very little $$.

I rebuilt a B43E for my 316 a few years ago and am very pleased with the results. I found all the parts for the rebuild at onanparts.com and the prices were very fair. Total cost of parts and machining was about $700 and I did the tear down and re-assembly myself. The advice about paying close attention to the assembly specs is critical- make sure you check tolerances closely and you will have a brand new engine that will likely outlast you.
