All of a sudden my kohler k161 has started playing up, it struggles to start, then coughts and splutters and when its finally running right it dies under any load. I have cleaned the tank out, took the carb to bits (cleaned it all) and arsed about with mixture settings which i have found are 1 1/2 turns and 3 turns.

Could anyone suggest anything else to try?

I have a good fuel supply to the carb and a good spark, although you get a shock from the engine cowl, could this be related?

The way it behaves to me suggests a fuel problem.

Could the fact i am running unleaded be causing it, although i have run it on unleaded successfully previous to this.

Any help woukld be appreciated,

you shouldn't have any ignition or power flowing through the cowel. you need to look for a shorted wire. lots of electrical problems seem to act like fuel problems.

Yep, something is wrong with fire going through the tin. Check that out....it is your problem almost undoubtedly!

Yep, I think you already found your problem. Magneto/points are shorting out somewhere.

If you figure the short out and it still doesn't run right I would double check your float height.

Just another little trick, pull the tractor in the garage and with it running turn all of the lights out, might be able to find the short quicker by finding any arcing.

That works great with auto or motorcycle spark plug wires. You can see the smallest of leakage that way.

Yeah i think i need to investigate the electrics. Iv taken the engine cowl off but the plug lead still seems to dissappear into the engine. Whats to come off next? Flyweel?

It would be a good idea to pull off that flywheel and see what the magnets/ magneto are like. Mabye the contacts are just rusty and need cleaning....

Before I would take the flywheel off though I would investigate the points box and the wire going to the kill button and make sure they are not shorting out first.

A common problem with the K161 (28118E) is the magneto. They seem to crack and short out.
The coil is really rare and was only made for a few years.
The magneto (aka ignition coil) is under the flywheel.

A quick check - using a ohm meter, measure the resistance between the plug wire and ground. Should be about 7K ohms.

Mine was about 3K ohms - the engine would run but not enough spark to rev up.

I may have come across a source for the coil: look at his part number BX01.
Other Magneto Parts.

The other solution is to convert to battery ignition. Need a 12v internal resistor coil and condenser.
(worry about the details if it's needed)
