Sears ST-16/6 1972 SSI Problems

274 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Bud W
No Spark, I finally got the flywheel off today so I could check the stator for shorts and such everything looks to be OK. I get a little over 6 volts AC when I turn the engine with the starter. I guess my question is are the little triggers on the flywheel supposed to be magnetic, because mine are not at all. I did notice that the SSI pickup spot is slightly magnetized. Thanks in Advance for your HELP

Is this a Tecumseh or Onan?

Sorry for the late reply also have computer issues. It's a Tecumseh
So I cleaned up every thing underneath the flywheel reassembled and set the gap on the SSI module. Still No spark. Checked the voltage, cranking with the starter, going to the module wire I got 38V ac. Checked voltage going to the regulator 5.4V ac. I would think 38 volts going to the module would create spark if it were good.

Chances are good the the SSI module is dead. They had an issue that if you pull the plug wire off and don't have a grounded plug or something for the spark to jump, internal charge buildup will kill the SSI module when you pull the cord.
