A few years ago, I decided to have the rear light flash, instead of on steady when you have the key turned to run and accessory's. So I installed a turn signal light flasher. Easy enough for me to figure out. Worked well, then the flasher when bad. It was a used one I had, so I drilled a small hole in it and put in some wd40. Started working. Then stopped again after some time. So I found another used one. Put it in and all's well. After two years or so, it stopped working. Did the wd40 trick again. So with in the last 6 months, it stopped again. So I frigged with and would not work. Ok, I'll buy a new one. Put the new one in and it didn't work. Ok. Some thing else wrong ??? Checked things, all seemed good. Battery volts at 12.5. Ok old one is no good, so I took it apart, right, I can't make it any worse. So I looked at it and frigged with it and got it to work. There is a tab that sets the gap at the coil and lever to move the points. It seems the more you close the gap, the faster it flashes. Gap is set by moving the tab. So I put the old one back in the tractor. Took the new one apart just to see, and sure enough, once I close the gap it worked. So I guess I have a spare. Expensive way to learn, but I learned. Picture shows screw driver pointing to tab and then gap at coil.

The new one may have been a defective flasher (it happens - just because it is new does not mean it will function properly ( like a bad spark plug out of the package)). Another thought might be that you have some corrosion in the taillight circuit (positive side or ground side) causing less than battery voltage to be available for the flasher to work properly at times. You say you checked volts at battery but you may have a lower voltage reading at the light with the light on to load the circuit.

Good idea to have the light flash - you could even add an extra switch in the circuit to bypass the flasher to take it in or out of the circuit so that the light could function as a warning light or tail light.

When I rewired my rail road crossing signal I used a 3 prong flasher. Some of the older cars used them so the dash signal would be on when the actual turn signal would be off. Works great as an alternating flasher. Used back up lamp bulbs to replace the original 18V bulbs.

Ahhh, thanks chieffan, I remember those 3 prong ones. And that's why the dash light would stay on to indicate a problem with the signal lights, because the light circuit was broken. Am I correct on that ?
